Chapter One   Introduction

1.1   Motivation and Significance of the Study 

Human  culture  changes  at  a  fast  speed  with  the  rapid  development  of  society. Language,  as  the  carrier  of  culture,  is  undoubtedly  flexible  to  meet  the  needs  of recording or depicting relevant society events. When new social phenomena appear and the current language fails to describe such phenomena, neologisms and new expressions are  coined  to  bridge  the  gap.  The  continuous  emergence  of  neologisms  and  new expressions  reflects  the  fact  that  language  changes  together  with  society,  which  is  in agreement  with  the  basic  tenet  of  Cognitive  Linguistics,  namely, “Reality-Cognition-Language”  (Wang  Yin,  2007,  p.  8).  Since  the  implementation  of Chinese  reform  and  opening  up,  neologisms  have  come  into  being  from  time  to  time. Moreover, in the 21st century, new expressions are emerging in an endless stream. Due to the thriving of the Internet, the information is transmitted at an inconceivable speed. Naturally,  people  gain  a  more  convenient  access  to  emergent  novelties.  In  this  way, people  by  nature  are  inclined  to  make  a  conclusion  on  the  kindred  emergent  novelties prevalent in current society by means of language, for instance: This kind of expressions is usually employed in the title of news reports. In this way,  X  fēng  becomes  frequently  used  and  turns  into  a  buzz  expression,  which  reflects people’s common concern towards emergent novelties. Based  on  the  preceding  account,  this  thesis  tries  to  make  a  research  on  X  fēng from  the  perspective  of  Cognitive  Linguistics  (including  Construction  Grammar),  thus regarding  the  expression  of  X  fēng  as  a  neologism  construction.

1.2   Research Object and Scope 
As  is  mentioned  above,  the  research  object  of  this  thesis  is  the  Chinese expression  X  fēng,  and  it  is  within  the  category  of  neologism.  We  attempt  to  expound the  cognitive  mechanism  of  X  fēng  from  the  perspective  of  Cognitive  Linguistics (including Construction Grammar). Namely, the Chinese expression X fēng is regarded as a construction.
