And in the studies of Chinese word classes it is unjustified to follow the “principle of parsimony”. Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Introduction
Word class categorization of analytic languages has always been a hot and difficult issue in linguistics. The word class labeling of Chinese dictionaries and C-E dictionaries is also not easy. It is noteworthy that word class labeling is a knotty problem in the compilation of C-E dictionaries, which affects the macrostructure and microstructure of C-E dictionaries, especially the setting of senses of entries, translation and exemplifications in the microstructure. Empirical studies also show that, the degree of accurate judgment of word classes directly affects the quality of translation of C-E dictionaries, thereby affecting the entire quality of compilation of C-E dictionaries (Wang Renqiang & Zhang Yihua, 2006).

After that, Dionysius Thrax, a very great Ancient Greek grammarian, set up an 8 word class categories system in his masterpiece called Techene Grammatike. They are nouns (combined proper nouns and common nouns, including adjectives), verbs, participles (from verbs), prepositions & conjunctions (from uninflected forms), articles & pronouns (from inflected forms), and adverbs. The next master is Priscian who made another classification which is surprisingly similar to that of Dionysius Thrax, which made interjection an independent word class. But in 1795, Lindley Murray made a modification and classified the word classes into another eight parts, which first divided adjective from noun and became the base of ‘traditional grammar’. During 13th to 14th century, the influential Modisi School analyzed Arist
