As a kind of phonological figures of speech, alliteration serves as the basis of English rhymed poetry, which endows language with beauty of rhyme and rhythm, making them full of musicality and rendering the language atmosphere. Another means to achieve phonological beauty in English is rhyme. Similarly, it refers to a rhetorical device that two or more words end in the same sound, such as “girl” and “curl”. The third phonological rhetorical device commonly seen in English is homophonic pun, which means that two or more English words have the exactly same pronunciation, such as “ship” and “sheep”. The use of diplomatic phonological rhetorical devices with Chinese characteristics is an important way of presenting Chinese diplomatic language art, which can convey the foreign policy and political intention. The emotive force and aesthetic value derived from phonological rhetorical devices can enhance the communication of Chinese diplomatic discourse. In the translating of diplomatic phonological expressions, diplomatic translators as the TAS are expected to shoulder the responsibility of political communication and aesthetic practice. From decoding to encoding, they are anticipated to convey the basic political connotation of diplomatic phonological expressions at the diplomatic level and pay attention to the aesthetic value and emotive meaning of the translated versions at the linguistic level, to reinforce its attention value and memory value at the communication level. 

The thesis makes a systematic analysis of the aesthetic object and the aesthetic subject of the translation of Chinese diplomatic phonological rhetorical devices, including the main types, stylistic characteristics, discursive functions as well as the subjective initiative of diplomatic translators. In view of the complexity and particularity of this language phenomenon, it is safely concluded that instead of relying on only one translation principle, diplomatic translators should adopt an interdisciplinary approach. On the basis of comprehensive discussion, the thesis proposes a compound translation standard of “Political Equivalence plus Prosodic Re-presentation” that applies to the translation of diplomatic phonological phenomenon, according to translation aesthetics and “Political Equivalence” principle.
