the latter belongs to the Indo-European family of phonological characters. As a result, there are huge differences between them in terms of vocabulary composition, syllabic features, etc. Accordingly, it is often difficult for translators to find the corresponding phonological characteristics of Chinese in English. Moreover, the particularity and complexity of diplomatic language and context makes the translation of phonological phrases more challenging. For translators and interpreters, it is already a tough task to accurately deliver the basic political connotation of diplomatic discourse, not to mention the re-presentation of musical effects. At present, the bulk of diplomatic phonological expressions and phrases, due to the above factors, have lost their aesthetic and emotive meanings in the process of translating.

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Previous Studies on Diplomatic Discourse Translation

Diplomatic discourse belongs to the political discourse of institutional discourse and is the carrier of country’s diplomatic ideas and policies (Hu & Li, 2018). Since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012 when President Xi Jinping has made major plans and directional guidance to enhance China’s international voice, studies related to diplomatic discourse translation have correspondingly rose in a rapid way, which, to some extent, conforms to the trend of China’s foreign policies (Chu, 2010). The previous studies on the translation strategies and methods of diplomatic discourse with Chinese characteristics are mainly carried out from the following three aspects, the translation principle of diplomatic discourse, the translation of key diplomatic terms, and the translation of diplomatic rhetorical devices (Hu & Li, 2018). 

2.1.1 Translation Principle of Diplomatic Discourse

Compared with the studies on the other two aspects, there are relatively few scholars and researchers to focus on the translation principle or criteria of diplomatic discourse because most of them are inclined to think that there is no standard translation strategy that can cover all the branches of diplomatic discourse. This is partly because studies on diplomatic discourse translation have started late and have not formed a comprehensive system. However, it is worth mentioning that several studies have discussed the translation principle of diplomatic discourse. 

2.2 Previous Studies on Translation of Phonological Rhetorical Devices from the Perspective of Translation Aesthetics

The employment of phonological rhetorical devices is closely associated with the creation of poetry and prose as these genres need to resort to rhymes and music to achieve the full expression of thoughts and emotion. Especially, the beauty of rhyme, soul of poetry, is considered as the fundamental feature of poetry that distinguishes it from other literary genres (Zhang, 2016). Phonological rhetorical device belongs to one of the branches that translation aesthetic studies and needs to be guided theoretically by translation aesthetics because it is an essential approach that achieves the musical beauty of language. To date, previous studies on translation of phonological rhetorical phenomenon have mostly focused on such literary genres as poetry, prose, drama, and novel, and among them, poetry has been attracted the considerable attention of scholars.
