4.1 Research Design 

The  purpose  of  the  study  is  to  demonstrate  how  the  linguistic  features  help  to realize  the  interpersonal  meaning  in  the  novel  Emma  based  on  the  interpersonal function  theory  of  systemic  functional  grammar.  This  study  attempts  to  answer  the following questions: (1)What  are  the  distributive  features  of  different  interpersonal  resources  in  the dialogues of the three major characters? (2)According  to  systemic  functional  grammar  theory,  what  kind  of  meaning  is constructed in the utterances of the three major characters? (3)How do the utterances of the three major characters reveal the changes in their personality and personal relationships?

CONCLUSION

This  study  attempts  to  apply  the  interpersonal  function  to  the  analysis  of  the interpersonal  meaning  in  Emma.  Through  the  analysis,  the  distributive  features  of different interpersonal resources and the meaning conveyed by them are revealed. Then the  major  findings  of  the  present  study  are  summarized  and  presented.  Finally, limitations of the present study and suggestions for further study are also discussed in this chapter.   This  study  makes  an  analysis  of  the  possible  means  to  realize  the  interpersonal meaning  in  Emma  within the framework of Halliday’s interpersonal meaning theory. Interaction is the purpose of using language.
