First, Emma is the best representative of Austen’s novel art. Through the people and things in Highbury village, the novel depicts the panorama of the social life of the middle class people at the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth centuries. This novel has been studied from many aspects by many linguists, but rarely from the perspective of interpersonal function. So this research can provide another new viewpoint for the reader to appreciate the novel. Second, the research is beneficial for the learning and teaching of English language. Since we know the distribution of different language resources and how to use different language resources to achieve a variety of interpersonal meanings, and thus we can have a deeper understanding of language structure and language meaning in literary texts, which can better improve our English reading and writing ability and have a very far-reaching significance for English learners and teachers.
