course  analysis and  publishes  the  book  An  Introduction  to  Functional  Grammar.  This  framework  of systemic  functional  grammar  theory  can  be  used  to  analyze  any  spoken  and  written language  in  English.  This  thesis  aims  to  apply  this  kind  of  highly  operational  and practical discourse analysis theory to the analysis of the interpersonal resources and the interpersonal meaning revealed by them in the literary text Emma. The  significance  of  this  research  lies  in  two  aspects:  theoretical  aspect  and  the practical one. As for the theoretical part, it testifies the possibility and applicability of using  systemic  functional  grammar  theory  to  analyze  literary  discourses.  It  not  only expands the research scope of interpersonal meaning of  systemic functional grammar, but  also  provides  a  Reference  for  the  researchers  to  make  an  analysis  of  the interpersonal meaning of other literary works. The practical significance is reflected in the following aspects. First, Emma is the best representative of Austen’s novel art. Through the people and things in Highbury village, the novel depicts the panorama of the social life of the middle class people at the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth centuries. This novel has been studied from many  aspects by many linguists, but rarely from the perspective of interpersonal  function.  So  this  research  can  provide  another  new  viewpoint  for  the reader  to  appreciate  the  novel.  Second,  the  research  is  beneficial  for  the  learning  and teaching  of  English  language.  Since  we  know  the  distribution  of  different  language resources  and  how  to  use  different  language  resources  to  achieve  a  variety  of interpersonal  meanings,  and  thus  we  can  have  a  deeper  understanding  of  language structure and language meaning in literary texts, which can better improve our English reading  and  writing  ability  and  have  a  very  far-reaching  significance  for  English learners and teachers.

2.1  Historical  Development  of  Interpersonal  Meaning  Within SFG
