CHAPTER TWORELEVANT STUDIES
In this chapter, firstly some relevant studies on lexical chunks, such as definition andclassification of lexical chunks, characteristics of lexical chunks, and also roles of lexicalchunks in SLA are concluded. Besides, the necessity of studying lexical chunks from theperspective of country-specific is studied.
2.1 Relevant Studies on Lexical Chunks
With the development of cognitive linguistics, lexical chunks are gaining more and moreattention in language study. Combining lexical and grammatical features, lexical chunkshave specific expression function and can be stored and retrieved whole from memory(Huang Yan & Wang Haixiao 2011). Many researches (Wong-Fillmore 1976; Pawley andSyder 1983; Sinclair 1991; Nattinger and De Carrico 1992; Wray 1992; Diao Linlin 2004) inrecent years show lexical chunks are playing a significant role in language competence.Lexical chunks are important units in language usage - they play a significant role inlanguage understanding and language output. Lewis (1993) points out that acquisition oflanguage knowledge and improvement of language competence is realized throughexpansion of learners’ lexical chunks, collocation and effective acquisition of basicvocabulary and grammar.Though more and more attention are being paid to lexical chunks at home and abroad, there is still not a clear and unified definition of lexical chunks. Many scholars (Hacuta1974; Krashen 1978; Krashen & Scarcella 1978; Pawley & Syder 1983; Abney 1991;Sinclair 1991; Lewis 1993, 1997; Wray 1999; Nattinger & De Carrico 2000; Wang Lifei &Zhang Dafeng 2006; Lu Bingpu 2008; Duan Shiping 2008; Guo Xihuang 2009) have giventheir interpretations of lexical chunks from different perspectives and based on differenttheoretical foundations. There are about 57 terms created and used to describe lexicalchunks (Wray 2002). Some call them prefabricated chunks, some call them prefabricated orready-made language, some call them formulas, some call them fixed or semi-fixedexpressions, some call them language blocks, some call them lexicalised sentence stems, some call them lexical phrases and so on (Howarth, 1998; Gitsaki, 1996). Even thoughnames of lexical chunks are different, all of them refer to the same language phenomenon-multi-word units, and this phenomenon is of close relationship with collocation.

2.2 Lexical Chunks in the Field of SLA
Lexical chunks have always been a focus in the field of SLA. Skehan (1998) says L2learners develop interlanguage through two ways-rule-based learning and examplar-basedlearning, and the latter is the construction of prefabricated chunks or lexical chunks.Altenberg & Granger (2001) have found that about 70% of the daily spoken language ofspeakers is made up of lexical chunks.Lewis (1993) points out that the acquisition of language knowledge and theimprovement of language competence is realized through expression of learners’ lexicalchunks, collocation and effective acquisition of basic vocabulary and grammar. Lexicalchunks affect the naturalness and fluency of the target language.Psychological linguistics and construction grammar hold that lexical chunks play asignificant role in second language output (Goldberg 1995, 2006; Altenber
