CHAPTER ONEINTRODUCTION
1.1 Rationale of the Study
Idioms are omnipresent in the world’s languages. Idioms are important components ofEnglish vocabulary. Cooper (1998) stresses that idiomatic expressions deserve specialattention in language programs and should not be relegated to a position of secondaryimportance in the curriculum. English idioms are indispensable to EFL learners.Idiomatic expressions are frequently encountered not only in written discourses, butalso in spoken ones. Beate (2003) claims that idioms invoke special problems for EFLlearners because of the inherent features, such as, compositeness, ?xedness, institutionalization, and semantic opacity. Ganji (2011) believes that through idiomsare pervasive existing, idioms are a stumbling block to EFL learners.Laufer (2000) pointed out that learners tend to avoid using of idioms. However, idioms are unavoidable and crucial to both communication and comprehension. Bulut(2004) found that learners rely on the literal meanings conveyed in the contexts andguess what they mean, treating those similar idioms as false friends. EFL learners tendto make mistakes about confusable idioms because of the word-for-word translationhabit. The psychological source of misuse lies in confusion and the misuse is onlyexternal manifestation of the confusion (Zhang Bo 2008: 38). EFL learners are morelikely to misuse the idioms which are similar in forms or meanings. Englishconfusable idioms and their intricate features often confuse and add extra difficultiesfor EFL learners in both understanding and using.

CHAPTER TWOIDIOMS AND CONFUSABLE IDIOMS
2.1 Idioms
Since the 1970s English idioms have received a fair amount of attention (Siyanova2011: 252). In recent years, there has been heightened awareness of the critical role ofidioms in vocabulary acquisition learning and teaching in L2. Researchers at homeand abroad have done some relative research concerning idioms from differentperspectives. There are many definitions of idioms that overlap with others to some extent. Themost prevalent description is that idioms are fixed multi-word expressions withspecific historical and cultural backgrounds. The meanings of idioms are implicit, which are not completely derivable from the sum of the parts (Ann 2003, PengQinghua 2005, Zyzik 2009). Cooper (1998) describes the linguistic characteristics ofidioms as syntactic flexibility, and the closeness between their literal and figurativemeanings. Matlock (1998) says that idioms have literal meanings and figurativemeanings which are activated at the same time. The figurative meanings of idioms arequicker to be comprehended than their literal meanings.Idioms are colorful expressions to communicate thoughts and feelings of English, which can be used in all types of languages, such as informal and formal, spoken andwritten situations (Bulu
