CHAPTER ONEINTRODUCTION
1.1 Rationale of the Present Study
Dictionaries are indispensable tool for learners in the process of SLA and the value of themis estimated by their usage. Not much attention was paid to dictionary users in theconventional dictionary research, however, users are now gaining more and more attention.Even so, most of the dictionaries in the Chinese market are not Chinese users-specific.Lexical chunks are of great importance to language learners, because they affectlearners’ linguistic accuracy, fluency, idiomaticity, native-likeness and communicativecompetence. Implicit knowledge is the kind of knowledge we possess of our mother tongueand it consists of formulaic chunks and also unconscious knowledge of abstract patterns orrules relating to both minor schemas as in simple collocations and to major schemas.Research (Nation & Waring 1997) show that once learners have acquired 4000-5000 wordfamilies they can fluently communicate in the target language; and when they have acquired2000-3000 word families they can speak and write in the target language. Nevertheless, lotsof Chinese EFL learners still cannot speak fluent English even though they have a muchlarger vocabulary. Why? From the perspective of SLA, the obstacle Chinese EFL learnersencounter in their learning process is not language rules or new words but lexical chunks. The importance of lexical chunks has been emphasized by many scholars at home andabroad, such as Pawley & Synder (1983), Widdowson (1989), Ellis (1994), Wray (2002)and so on. According to the Multi-dimensional Definition Theory, lexical chunks plays animportant role in conveying communicative information and they are also one of the mostimportant parts of the entry word definition. The ultimate goal of ELD is to help learnerscommunicate in English with others successfully. However, those existing ELDs in Chinesemarket haven’t presented lexical chunks in a rather satisfying way. They neglect the factthat learners from different culture backgrounds have their specific cognitive features inlexical chunks acquisition and thus cannot meet the actual needs of them for lexical chunksinformation. In order to solve this problem, the country-specific principle should be takeninto consideration when dealing with lexical chunks. Furthermore, dictionary compilersshould add a large number of “prefabricated modular” into ELDs to help explain relatedwords in a multi-dimensional way and help Chinese EFL learners master authentic English, which is surely of great theoretical and practical significance.

1.2 Research Objectives and Questions
The ultimate objective of this
thesis is to modify the presentation of lexical chunks in theexisting ELDs from the perspective of Chinese EFL learners and to help learners get a fineknowledge of lexical chunks and thus can speak fluent English. All things considered, in the present study, features and causes of lexical chunks errorsmade by Chinese EFL learners will be analyzed, their actual needs for lexical chunks aswell as the statue quo and deficiencies of lexical chunks presentation in the existing ELDswill also be investigated, and some suggestions will also be given on modification of lexicalchunks information in ELDs to improve the existing ELDs. And the focus will be put on thefollowing questions:1) What features do Chinese EFL learners have in lexical chunks acquisition?2) What are the deficiencies of the
