Chapter Five Discussion and Analysis of the Conflict Talkin Job-hunting Programs
In this chapter, the writer will take some conflict talk episodes from The Apprentice andOnly You as example to analyze how conflict talk generates, develops and ends and analyzewhat causes conflict talk on the basis of relevance theory. Besides, the writer will explore thedifferences in conflict talk between two programs.
5.1 The Structure of Conflict Talk in Job-hunting Programs
According to Zhao Yingling, conflict talk can be divided into three stages: the initiatingstage, the maintaining stage and the terminating stage. The author will adopt herclassification and analyze the patterns of conflict talk in the two programs from the firststage, namely, the initiating stage.Generally speaking, communication often proceeds in the form of people’s pairedcollaboration, Sack(1974) proposed the concept of adjacency pair, which means twosubsequent utterances produced by two speakers constitutes a conversational turn. In order tohave a detailed analysis of conversation, Sack distinguished the first adjacency part and thesecond adjacency part. The type of a pair is given by a common illocutionary intention. Thatis to say, given a first part of a pair, the second part of the pair can be predicted by its type, asthe second pair is supposed to be relevant and expectable. However, the second pair of anadjacency is not necessarily preferred. It can also sometimes be dispreferred.Claim-counterclaim is an adjacency pair. The following examples illustrate this.

Conclusion
As an ending part, this chapter will state the general summaries. The major findings, limitations and suggestions of the thesis for future study will be illustrated based on theprevious study. The present study chooses several episodes from The Apprentice and Only You. Thestudy has findings as follows:Firstly, the patterns of conflict talk in job-hunting programs have been analyzedrespectively in terms of initiation, maintenance, and termination. In the initiating stage, conflict occurs by two means. The first type is that the speaker starts the conversation by aclaim, but the hearer disagrees with him/her and the second type is that communicators useopposing question to show their disagreements. In the maintaining stage, there are threepatterns: argument, repetition and interruption. In the terminating stage, conflict talk ends byobedience, compromise, ending in a draw and interrupted by the third party.Secondly, through detailed study and analysis on the data, the present study reveals thereasons of conflict talk: in the process of ostensive-inferential communication, the hearercannot always realize the true intention behind the “ostensive-stimulus”; and because ofdifferent cognitive contexts, communicators will argue with each other.Lastly, the author compares conflict talk in The Apprentice and Only You and finds thatthere are differences between them, and these differences are mainly manifested in the wayof each stage of conflict talk. On this basis, the author also explores what those differencesfrom the perspective of Hofstede’s value dimensions.
