The tremendous growth of the Indian retail sector along with several established organized retail in big Asian markets like China has prompted India for establishing multi brand in organized retail. The Indian retail has been valued at around US 450 billion with an anticipated growth of 10.2% in 2011-12. The unorganized retail has been growing at a rate of 6% with the organized retail booming at a growth rate of 35%. The Indian retail has a huge contribution (13%) to the economy with the organized retail only contributing 6.5% of the pie. The growth is expected to be around 16-18% in the next five years. There is an enormous scope for expanding the infrastructure and investments in SCM. The infrastructure support needed to improve the processes of the supply chain would help to eliminate wastages and improve the operational efficiency. This paper looks at the SCM requirements needed to attract high quality FDI and thereby support the anticipated Indian growth.
According to Deloitte India's retail market worth $400 billion would be the nation's second-largest employer, after agriculture. This move strengthens India's poor food supply chain which is riddled with spoilage, hoarding, poor infrastructure and middlemen. It's estimated by the government sources that around 30 percent of produce in India rots and with soaring food costs and inflations coupled with tens of millions who go to bed hungry each night this is a crucial component for our nation's growth. It has been conjectured that if companies like Wal-Mart, Carrefour and Tesco are allowed to open shops of their own, the investment in billions would improve farming techniques and increase the efficiency of getting produce into stores more quickly thus bringing down inflation which has averaged over 10 percent over the last year and also improving the rural incomes.
According to the Ministry of Commerce it costs 76.9 billion rupees ($1.7 billion) to build the additional 35 million metric tons food storage facility that India badly needs. Thus the loosening of restrictions on foreign investment in India's retail sector could help India to get more storage space built. In mid 2012 a government committee studying multi-brand retail cleared the idea of 100% and put up a suggested target of $100 million as minimum investment for foreign companies as FDI to enter this sector. For example India is currently the largest producer of milk in the world, the second-largest producer of fruit and vegetables and third largest producer of grains. However only about 5% of its produce is processed and around 30% perishes before it reaches market. This shows the importance of a proper supply chain. It is estimated that more than 50% of this waste can be eradicated if a proper infrastructure was in place. The CEO of Future Group, Rakesh Biyani, a big player in the retail sector has admitted that the Indian retail industry badly needs access to more capital as 'We just cannot build the back-end without an equal amount of development in the front-end.'
The UK's Tesco Wal-Mart of the US and other players are keen to invest in this market.
