Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Conflict talk is a universal phenomenon of language, occurring frequently in everydaylife. It often leads to communication breakdown so that people can’t communicatesuccessfully. In terms of Mc Murray and Malloy, conflict talk means a “relationship”, whentwo or more communicators have “non-compatible goals” and adopt the “pro-social andantisocial tactics” to impact other communicators (Mc Murray & Malloy, 1996:185). Becausepeople have different world views and values on the same thing, they often argue with eachother. Kuo (1992:4) says, “Conflict talk is ubiquitous, normal, and integral to the workings ofevery society”. Although conflict talk is so common in our life, it is rarely covered, Briggs(1996: 11) says, “conflict forms a type of disorderly discourse and because of the disorder,researchers don’t venture into this language behavior”. Therefore, how to avoid conflict talkand communicate with other people is really important.Conflict talk can be found everywhere, workplace included. When we do our work, weinevitably have conflict with our leaders and colleagues. Conflict occurs between twocolleagues or colleagues and leaders because of different goals, values, and desires. For anemployee, conflict talk with his/her colleagues will have a bad impact on the workingatmosphere, so will the relationship among colleagues; in the same way, conflict talk withhis/her leaders will threaten their future promotion. For a job applicant, conflict talk withother applicants will cause a disharmonious atmosphere of the application, which will makea bad impression on interviewers; conflict talk with interviewers is even worse, which willdirectly influence their chances of getting the job.

1.2 Significance of the Study
Conflict talk, as an inevitable language phenomenon, frequently occurs in our dailycommunication. It is well worthy of being researched and analyzed at length. The presentstudy has great significance in two respects:First of all, previous researchers mainly deal with conflict talk within the framework of cooperative principle, face theory, politeness theory and adaption theory. In this
thesis, theauthor uses relevance theory as the theoretical basis, trying to explore the reasons causingconflict talk in job-hunting programs. This introduces a new perspective in the study ofconflict talk.Secondly, the study is also of great importance on the practical front. Conflict talkoccurs everywhere and it causes tense relationship between people. Through the study ofconflict talk in this paper, readers could know how conflict talk around us generates,maintains and ends. This can help people deal with and reduce the conflict talk. Besides,unemployment has remained a worldwide issue in recent years. Everybody is pursuing adecent job or a higher position to fulfill his ambition. However, most of the time, it isunsuccessful communications either with colleagues or bosses rather than your incapabilitythat stands in your way to a better position. Therefore, conflict talk in workplace is a problemworth our earnest attention. The present study can give job hunters some help.
