Chapter 2 Literature Review

This chapter reviews some backgrounds of adverbial conjunctions, including thedefinition and judging criteria of adverbial conjunctions, related researches ofadverbial conjunctions at home and abroad, range of English and Chinese adverbialconjunctions, some previous studies on works of Alice Munro and Margaret Atwoodat home and abroad and the related theories.

2.1 Adverbial Conjunctions

The term “adverbial conjunction” is proposed by Yuan Surong in A ComparativeStudy of Adverbial Conjunctions in Chinese and English in 2013 on the basis of theresearches of predecessors such as Zhang Yisheng (2000), Lǚ Shuxiang (1979), ZhangBin (2000), Halliday (1976), Ernst (2002), Cingue (1999), Quirk, R. et al. (1973,1985), Biber, D. et al. (2000) etc. However, what are the adverbial conjunctions? Howto judge them and what are the range and the classification of adverbial conjunctionsin Chinese and English? All this questions have to be answered before making afurther study.English and Chinese adverbial conjunctions refer in particular to adverbs andadverbial phrases which play the connective role in sentences and discourses,indicating the relationship between clauses, sentences or paragraphs. It’s not a parallellexical category like adjectives, prepositions, conjunctions and nouns, but a kind ofcomprehensive functional categories divided according to connective function ofwords. They are a special class of words. The definition of adverbial conjunctions canbe clearly illustrated in the following diagram:

2.2 Previous Studies on Works of Alice Munro and Margaret Atwoodat Home and Abroad
Alice Munro is a Canadian woman writer, who is known as “Chekhov of Canada”.In 1968, she won the Governor General’s Awards after her first collection of shortstories called Dance of the Happy Shades was published. Alice Munro has published anumber of works so far, including thirteen short stories and one novel similar tocollection of stories, which spread throughout the world. Readers and the mediathought highly of her works. In more than fourteen years of her literary career, AliceMunro dedicated to writing short stories all the time and thus won many awards,including three times for Governor General’s Awards, twice for the Giller Prize, andCommonwealth Writers Prize, the Canadian Booksellers Award, O. Henry Award etc.Finally, Alice Munro won the Nobel Prize in Literature on October 10, 2013. She wascalled “Master of Contemporary Short Stories”. Thus Alice Munro became thethirteenth female of the Nobel Prize in Literature in history.
