5.1 The Concept of Cohesion
Cohesion is a basic concept in text linguistics. In the last few years, academiccircles at home and abroad have attached great importance to the theory of cohesionand have carried out some relevant researches, which developed and perfected thetheory. In a text, cohesion is not a sufficient but necessary condition. It exits in allkinds of discourses and represents the continuity between parts of the text, making iteasier to understand a text. In a word, cohesion plays an important role in theconstruction of a discourse.Halliday and Hasan (1976: 4) define “cohesion” as “relations of meaning that exitwithin the text, and that define it as a text”; Zhu Yongsheng (2001) contends thatcohesion is the relationship between items in a text, especially those surface-structurefeatures which link different elements of a text; Cambridge Grammar of English(2006: 242) demonstrates that “cohesion refers to the grammatical and lexical meansby which written sentences and speakers’ utterances are joined together to maketexts”, and a text is cohesive if the sentence and spoken utterances are semanticallylinked and consistent. In Longman Advanced American Dictionary (2003: 259),“cohesion” means “a close relationship based on grammar or meaning between twoparts of a sentence or the parts of a larger piece of writing”. From the differentdefinitions above, we can conclude that cohesion is very important in constructing acomplete text.

Conclusion
Throughout the whole
thesis, it has covered the definition and judging criteria ofadverbial conjunctions, which makes us have a rough idea of them. Then relatedresearches of adverbial conjunctions at home and abroad are stated, providing thetheoretical basis for our study. Furthermore, the range and classification of adverbialconjunctions in Chinese and English are given, which makes the research content ofour study much clearer. In addition, it investigates studies on works of Alice Munroand Margaret Atwood at home and abroad, making us know more about their worksand the necessity of regarding them as our study corpus. Last but not least, relatedtheories of the study are illustrated under the guidance of Halliday and Hasan’scohesion theory, discourse analysis theory and M. A. K. Halliday’s functionalgrammar theory. All of them are extraordinarily important for our study.
