摘要:Four questions are raised and four correspondent hypotheses are put forwardaccordingly in chapter three. After a series of analysis on the data collected from thepresent research in chapter four, this section tries to offer answers one by one.
Chapter One Introduction
English relative clause (RC) is one of the most important grammatical structuresin the English as foreign language (EFL) acquisition. It is also a difficult grammaticalpart for Chinese students to learn English RCs due to the two languages’ different RCstructures. Therefore, great challenges would be met in the process of Chinesestudents’ learning English RCs due to negative language transfer. The present researchis of great significance in the following aspects.First, for hundreds of years language transfer study has been an important theoryin the field of applied linguistics, second language acquisition and foreign languageteaching. Ellis once made comments that in second language acquisition field a theorywith no consideration or description of language transfer is not an integrated one.Although there are many previous studies related to language transfer and relativeclause, few researches concentrate on Chinese students’ learning English RCs fromthe perspective of language transfer.Second, the study on Chinese students’ learning of English RCs in terms oflanguage transfer is theoretically and practically significant in the foreign languageteaching and learning field. The present research is expected to extend the applicationof language transfer theory and the empirical practice so that it can enrich theexplanation of language transfer theory to Chinese students’ learning English RCs. Italso attempts to provide some help for the teaching and the learning of English RCsthrough studying the effects of language transfer on Chinese students’ learningEnglish RCs. Third, it has been pointed out by a lot of linguists that an important preliminarystep to understand language transfer is comparing the native language with the targetlanguage. The present research will analyze Chinese students’ learning English RCs interms of language transfer by means of contrastive analysis.The thesis is composed of five chapters.
Chapter one is a brief introduction of overall structure of the thesis. Chapter twois an overall review of language transfer theory including the definition, thedevelopment and the classification of language transfer; it also introduces thedefinition and classification of the relative clause, contrasts between English RCs andChinese RCs, and several hypotheses on relative clause acquisition. Chapter threeelaborates the research design including the subjects, materials, research questions &hypotheses, and research procedures. Chapter four concentrates on the analysis of theresearch results and discussion including Chinese students’ learning order of EnglishRCs, errors made by Chinese students, avoidance strategy adopted by Chinesestudents, and factors influencing the learning order of English RCs. Chapter five is aconclusion part including the major findings of the present research, limitations of thepresent research as well as suggestions for the further research.

2.1 Overall Review of Language Transfer
