Chapter One Introduction 

1.1 Research Background
As we live in an era of information explosion, people have access into plenty of information  from  different  kinds  of  channels.  Among  them,  newspaper  enjoys  long popularity  and  reputation  with  its  authority  and  portability.  People  can  easily  get information  about  the  world  through  newspaper  of  either  print  or  electronic  version. More or less the readers are affected by the news discourses in the long run. However, the  newspaper  and  the  editorials  in  particular  are  not  always  just  and  fair  though  it should  be.  Many  linguists  have  done  the  researches  from  many  aspects  of  the language  using  phenomena,  especially  from  the  perspective  of  critical  discourse analysis (CDA).    Discourse analysis resorts to a large number of approaches to analyze language use beyond the sentence level. The term “discourse analysis” first appeared in a paper published  by  Zellig  Harris  in  1952,  in  which  he  attempted  to  apply  the  American structural  approach  to  discourse  analysis.  After  half  a  century’s  development, discourse  analysis  is  now  a  relatively  mature  interdisciplinary  brunch  of  linguistic study.  It  focuses  on  language  in  use,  consisting  of  various  written  texts  as  well  as spoken  data  ranging  from  daily  conversation  to  highly  institutionalized  forms  of discourse. After the 1970s, discourse studies in the west can be categorized into two main  branches:  conversation  analysis  and  text  analysis.  The  conversation  analysis focuses on oral speeches, while the latter mainly pays its attention to text languages. There  is  such  a  wide  variety  of  approaches  to  conduct  discourse  analysis,  such  as Fairclough’s  three-dimension  approach,  framing  approach,  appraisal  theory.  Most researchers  conduct  studies  of  news  discourses  using  these  approaches.  These approaches  are  used  to  explore  the  underlying  value  system  and  ideology  hidden  in the  language.  However,  in  comparison  to  other  approaches,  discourse  analysis  of news  editorials  from  a  rhetorical  perspective,  especially  from  the  new  rhetoric perspective  represented  by  Kenneth  Burke  is  still  studied  by  a  small  number  of researchers.  Up  to  now,  there  is  little  research  on  news &n本论文由英语论文网提供整理，提供论文代写，英语论文代写，代写论文，代写英语论文，代写留学生论文，代写英文论文，留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
