Forensic stylistics is theanalysis of the way language is used in a document by comparing writing style to otherwritings by the presumed author of the text[3]. In other words, forensic stylisticsintends to analyze the writing styles in the legislative documents and attempts toestablish principles which can explain the particular choices made by law enactors intheir use of language.The first goal of stylistic analysis is “to study why and how the text means what itdoes”; the second one is “showing why the text is valued as it is”[4].The core ofstylistics discussion is the appropriateness of language to the social situations thatrefers to social contexts[5]. In other words, the choice of specific style must beappropriate to the requirements of a special register. Register, which is concerned withthe variables of field, tenor, and mode, is defined as a variety of language. These threeregister variables delineate the relationships between language functions and languageforms. Different registers make different styles. The change of communicativesituation and communicative purpose can cause the appearance of a new register wherethe language variation arises. The stylistic effects and the communicative functions arerealized by specific vocabularies, different syntaxes, and special textual structures inspecific registers.Functional linguists regard Legal English as a specific register, a sub-register oflegal language[6]. As a register, Legal English is a special mode of expression and anorm developed by a long practice of judicature in the common law countries[7]. LiJianbo suggests that Legal English is the instrumental language, which is quitedifferent from ordinary English and has its own special stylistic features[8]. Thestudies, applying linguistic theory to analyzing the style of legal language, are notmany abroad or at home. In the west, stylistic analysis of Legal English mainlyconcerns the research of courtroom discourse and the language of lawyers. Courtroomdiscourse study arises as the kernel among forensic linguistics studies and itsachievements are the richest. A large number of articles in the journal ForensicLinguistics belong to this type of study.
