2.1语言迁移的定义
语言迁移的概念是有转让期限发展而来的，所以研究语言迁移的时候，首先提到的就是转让期限。Transfer, derived from the Latin word "transferre", means "to carry", "to bear", or"to print, impress or otherwise copy (as a drawing or engraved design) from one surfaceto another". And it can also be used to illustrate "to carry-over or generalization of theprevious learned responses from one kind of situation to another." (Webster third newworld international dictionary, 1986: 356-357). Besides, it is a psychological termoriginally used to describe automatic, uncontrolled and subconscious interference ofprior learning on the subsequent learning behavior. Ellis (1965) gave the definition oftransfer as that the learning of task A will affect that of task B. And James (1980) putforward that "task A" can be replaced by first language (Fl); "task B" is substituted bysecond language (F2). Since then, the study of language transfer has periodically beenthe central and controversial research issue in the fields of applied linguistics and foreignlanguage learning.Gass and Selinker at least listed 17 definitions of language transfer in the bookLanguage Transfer in Language Learning. Certainly, the definitions are no less than 17.Therefore, it is a tough job to make a precise summary and description of the definitioncomprehensively. So far, the most approved and accepted one is the definition given byOdlin (1989) in his famous monograph Language Transfer: "Transfer is the influenceresulting from similarities and differences between the target language and any otherlanguage that has been previously (and perhaps imperfectly) acquired.，，(Odlin， 1989:27).
