本文是一篇高中英语论文,本研究提出应努力促进高中生在英语学习中的能动性投入,进而提高他们的英语成绩。首先,学校应采取措施鼓励英语教师更多地投入教学。其次,英语教师应充实自己的教学理论,定期更新教学方法。此外,英语教师应在教学中营造一种支持性、协作性和包容性的课堂氛围。
Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
The National Medium- and Long-term Education Reform and Development Plan (2010-2020) calls for giving full play to students’ initiative, caring for each student, and promoting each student’s development. Paying attention to students’ engagement in English learning is to examine the extent to which students are giving full play to their initiatives in the English classroom (Zhang, 2012). More specifically, attention should be paid to students’ agentic engagement (AE) in English learning, which emphasizes students’ initiative and autonomy in the learning process (Montenegro, 2017).
Agentic engagement refers to a student-initiated pathway to enhance their learning performance and skill development. Studies have proved its positive effect on students’ learning, skill development, and classroom performance (Reeve, 2013; Reeve & Tseng, 2011). Therefore, it is necessary to explore the situation and influencing factors of Chinese high school students’ agentic engagement in English learning because it is beneficial for English teachers to better exert students’ initiative in English learning. Furthermore, according to The National English Curriculum Standards of High School (2020 Edition), English teachers are expected to cultivate students’ autonomous learning abilities and encourage them to take responsibility for their learning. As highlighted by Guo and Li (2018), students’ AE, which reflects their level of autonomy and effort in the process of English learning, is a crucial factor in promoting autonomous learning. Therefore, it is essential to study senior high school students’ agentic engagement in English learning.
1.2 Research Purpose
The present study aims to investigate the levels of students’ perceived teacher engagement and English learning agentic engagement, and then further explore the correlation between student perceived teacher engagement, agentic engagement, and English learning achievement in the context of senior high school English classroom teaching. Specifically, by elucidating the relationship among these three variables, this study seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the factors that influence students’ agentic engagement and learning achievement in the English classroom. Ultimately, it is hoped that the findings of the present study will contribute to developing more effective pedagogical approaches and improve senior high school students’ English learning agentic engagement and positive outcomes.
Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Definitions
In this section, first, the definitions of work engagement and teacher engagement are introduced, followed by providing the definition of perceived teacher engagement in the present study. Secondly, since agentic engagement is recognized as the fourth component of student engagement (Reeve & Tseng, 2011), this section briefly introduces student engagement to clarify the relationship between agentic engagement and student engagement in the present study.
