5.1 Principle of Keeping the Original Style Selectively
Goldblatt often recommends Yan Fu’s Xin (faithfulness), Da(expressiveness) and Ya (elegance) as criteria of a good translation. He keeps stating that the translation should be faithful to the original as much as possible. Therefore, it’s not difficult to figure out that he endeavors to obey the principle of faithfulness in translating this novel. In order to follow the principle of faithfulness, Goldblatt translates some palace culture words in a literal way, so it’s easy to find transliteration in the English version of Wo De Di Wang Sheng Ya.

Conclusion
This thesis aims to make an analysis of the translations of palace culture through intensive reading of Wo De Di Wang Sheng Ya and its English version My Life as Emperor within the framework of André? Lefevere’s rewriting theory, followed by some principles beneficial to the translations of palace culture in similar historical novels in the future. Consequently, there are two major findings, which are presented in detail in the following part. In conformity with the two research questions proposed in the introduction, there are two major findings in this thesis. First, it can be concluded that Howard Goldblatt’s selection of Wo De Di Wang Sheng Ya is closely related to the main ideology and poetics in America and his personal ideology. To be specific, the influence of the main ideology in target readers’ society on the translator can be explained in three ways. First and foremost, Su Tong, the original author, is one of the most renowned Chinese authors in the western world. Second, this novel itself justifies the selection of Wo De Di Wang Sheng Ya to be translated. Set in an imaginary period in ancient China, it depicts imperial life in the court, full of mystery and oriental appeal to the target readers, especially the description of palace culture, like the imperial garments, etiquette, dispute, entertainment and so on.
