Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Su Tong, as one of the most celebrated Chinese writers both at home and abroad, is known for his deftly-constructed story structure, narrative style and innovative and experimental language. His novels are famous for beautiful and sensitive words, profound implication, as well as imaginative and circumlocutory plots. He is good at depicting the real human nature and characters’ inner world. Since 1983, Su Tong has published a large number of works including seven full-length novels and more than 200 novellas, some of which have been translated into such different languages as English, French, German and Italian, etc. bringing him great fame internationally and domestically. Wo De Di Wang Sheng Ya was written by Su Tong in 1992. Revolving around a spoilt and naive prince Duanbai, he is brought to power unexpected by his grandmother and become the seeming potent emperor of the Xie dynasty. Assuming the role as the ruler, he begins to abuse his power wildly. Nevertheless, he is nothing but a puppet emperor under the control of his grandmother, Madame Huangfu, and his biological mother, Madame Meng. Plagued by fear and frustration, he is deprived of the power to protect his lover and to make decision as to the domestic affairs. Ultimately, he is taken place by Duanwen, one of his half-brother, who is proven to be the only legal successor to the throne in accordance with the imperial edict. Drifting from place to place, he becomes a tightrope walker as he pleases. What distinguish this novella from other works of Su Tong are its oriental charm and mystique.
