ng three aspects:the syntactic relationship of the“Pǎo NP”construction,thereasons for the emergence of the“Pǎo NP”construction and the reasons for polysemyof the“Pǎo NP”construction.

Firstly,several studies are directed to discuss the syntactic relationship of the“Pǎo NP”construction.Guo(1999)investigated the phenomenon of intransitive verbswith objects from the aspects of the law of representation,structural properties,stylistic characteristics,and formation reasons.It is pointed out that“Vi+NP”have asemantic component“predicate”that is not represented in the syntactic level at thematter-reason relationship.For instance,“pǎo dìyībànɡ(跑第一棒)”refers to“pǎo+(názhe+dìyībànɡ)(跑+(拿着+第一棒)）”“názhe(拿着)”represents“predicate”.Yang(2007a)held that“Vi+NP”is different from“Vi+Prep+NP”,although it implies“Vi+Prep+NP”because“Vi+NP”produces semantic proliferationdue to syntactic operation,grammaticalization and metaphorization.Although Chenand Yang(2014)used the displacement theory of light verbs in generative grammar toexplore the phenomenon of intransitive verbs with objects such as“Pǎo NP”in modern Chinese.Chen and Yang still suggested that this kind of structure can beinterpreted as“Prep+NP+Vi”.For instance,pǎo zījīn(跑资金)‘run for funds’can beunderstood as“wéi zījīn pǎo(为资金跑)”.The syntactic status of NP in“Vi+NP”is toact as a syntactic object in the surface structure which aims to meet the requirements ofsymmetry between the conceptual and the syntactic system and the requirements of thesentence for the entire conceptual and syntactic system.Actually,NP indicatescomplement or adverbial in the deep structure,such as pǎo shēnɡyì(跑生意)‘run forbusinesses’,this NP belongs to the adverbial of purpose.Yang(2007b)mentioned that“Vi+NP”is a kind of syntactic ectopic.NP originally served as the complement of Vitogether with the preposition,and it was promoted to the object of Vi due to theomission of the preposition.

2.2 Semantics of“Pǎo NP”

Researches on“Pǎo NP”from the semantics angle are mainly composed of twosides:the research of the verb“pǎo”and the research of the“Pǎo NP”construction.

Initially,studies on the verb“pǎo”try to answer these three questions:when did“pǎo”have the running meaning?Where did the running meaning of“pǎo”come from?What happened to the pronunciation of“pǎo”?

In terms of the first question,Du(2004)mentioned that the meaning of“run”wasexpressed by the word“zǒu(walk)”from the pre-Qin Dynasty to the Tang and SongDynasties.The words“zǒu”and“pǎo”alternately expressed this meaning in the YuanDynasty.In the Ming and Qing dynasties,only the word“pǎo”was used to express themeaning of“run”.However,Jiang(2005/2012)thought that the running meaning ofthe verb“pǎo”appeared in the Ming Dynasty.Ye(2019)illustrated that the use of“zǒu”and“pǎo”gradually differentiated because of the increasingly refined languageexpression in the late Yuan Dynasty.In northern dialects,“pǎo”eventually replaced“zǒu”and became the main word to describe the running meaning in modern Chinese.
