Introduction
A. Tim Winton’s Life and Works
Tim Winton is a well-known and respected contemporary Australian writer, hecame from an ordinary police family in Karrinyup. When he was 12, his familymoved to Albany. Then, he had been to Italy, France, Ireland and Greece and stayedthere for two years, after that, he returned to Australia. Now, he lives in Fremantlewith his wife and three children. Up to present, he has won the most distinguishedliterary awards in Australian literature four times. He has published more than twentybooks and enjoyed great popularity at home and abroad.Tim Winton began to write poems at the age of 8, when he graduated from highschool, he focused on writing. At the age of 17, he entered Curtin University ofTechnology to study literary writing. Then he showed his extraordinary talent inliterary field. He had won four times Miles Franklin Literary Awards and two timesbeen nominated Booker Prize for his works and enjoyed the title of “child prodigy” inAustralian literary world. In 2006, he became a member of “100 Most InfluentialAustralians”. In addition, because of his contribution to the literature and society, heonce was awarded the Centenary Medal. What’s more, he also was regarded as a“Living Treasure” by the National Trust.Tim Winton is a prolific writer who dabbles in different literature genres: novels,shorts stories and plays. He has written 11 novels, 5 shorts story collections, 1 novella,3 plays and 6 Children’s books. His writing career was launched by his first novel: AnOpen Swimmer which was created in his college time, the book won him TheAustralian/Vogel Literary Award in 1981. His second book Shallows is one of hisrepresentative novels, which has won him the first Miles Franklin Literary Award in1984. He once said that he wrote his best part of three books while he studied atuniversity. His another excellent novels Cloudstreet was published in 1991 which wonhim second Miles Franklin Literary Award, hence his writing career was appropriatelyestablished. His other two novels Dirt

B. Cloudstreet and Breath
Cloudstreet was published in 1991 and won the Miles Franklin Literary Award in1992. This novel attracted critics’ and readers’ attention immediately when it waspublished. It is admittedly Tim Winton’s best-known work, frequently appearing inAustralia’s best-loved novels lists. This novel expresses author’s sense of nostalgia fortime and home. Tim Winton once said that: “Cloudstreet was my way to express theimportance of all the relationship I has through my life in Western Australia.”Winton chooses a particular point of view to explore and celebrate the meaning of life.Almost every characters in this novel undergoes a hard and long journey, theyeventually end in realization of the importance of the family. Specifically, the youngprotagonists’ ultimate recognition of identity and comprehension of the meaning oflife and importance of family from their miserable childhood encounters and difficultgrowth path predict the end of every characters’journey.The story takes place during World War II and revolves around two poor familieswho flee from their rural homes after experiencing separate family tragedies and sharea big house in Cloud Street, in Perth, a suburb of West Leederville.
