B. Protagonists’Rebellions
In Bildungsroman, protagonists’ growth will not be easy, they always undergo aserious of sufferings and conflicts in their growing process so as to become matured.Especially when the protagonists encounter big changes of their life, their attitudestoward life and society may become extreme, so they tend to make every effort toresist, only when they gradually recognize and position themselves after rebellionsand conflicts will they find their identity and enter the adulthood successfully.Though three protagonists in two novels have different growing experiences, they all suffer a lot from their separate changes of life. Unsatisfied and feelingrepressed to the growing surroundings, they choose to resist. This accords withErikson’s theory. As Erikson mentions: “This mutual selection, while frequentlyassociated with, and therefore interpreted as, a rebellion against or withdrawal fromthe parental environment….”[24]In their rebellion against the parental environment, three protagonists under discussion gradually understand the meaning of growth andget through growing crisis.

Chapter Three Exploration of Cloudstreet and Breath from Structure
On the basis of analyzing two novels from their contents and characters, thischapter will further explore their structures which fit to the common structuralfeatures of Bildungsroman. The first structural feature is the similar growing plotswhich accord with protagonists’ physical and mental development and reflect theirdynamic growth. The second is open ending, the author ends the novels withouttelling protagonists’ ultimate fates, leaving much imagining space for the readers. Thethird feature is the narrative perspective, different narrative perspectives have beenapplied in two novels, which can achieve different effects.
A. Formulated Plot Pattern
According to Professor Rui, the protagonists in Bildunsroman are dynamiccharacters, they usually experience misfortunes in their lives, then obtain newrecognition of society, lives and themselves. Therefore, the Bildungsroman possessessimilar structural plot pattern, it reflects protagonists’ growing trajectory and theirspiritual journey, they are: “innocence, temptation, confusion, test, loss of innocence, epiphany, re-recognition life and self.”[52]Actually, not all Bildungsroman follows thisstructure strictly, many variation may occur on the basis of this structure, thesevariation and creation contribute to more vitality and tension. In addition, ProfessorGao has analyzed protagonists’ spiritual situation in her article, she explores thespecial spiritual situation of protagonists in the 20thcentury by comparing with thetraditional growth theme, she points out the protagonists in the 20thcentury literaturealways show a painful, lost and rejective spiritual condition during growth.
