They have beenthrough ambivalent period under one roof more than twenty years. Finally, they solvethe contradictions and recover from their family tragedies, starting a new life. Thisnovel is precipitated by separate family tragedies, for which two young protagonistshave experienced unfavorable and difficult growing journeys full of pain andloneliness which cause their confusion, revolt and escape. Their discontent andrejection to families not only make them suffer the pain of growth but also lead tomore family conflicts. But after undergoing a bewildered, dissatisfied, evasive andresistant state, they ultimately choose to liberate themselves by forgetting childhoodmiseries and forgiving the people who have afflicted them, which predicts theirturning point of becoming mature and tolerant. Their growth and transform make twofamilies return to peace again and embrace new lives.

Chapter One Analysis of Cloudstreet and Breath from Content
In Bildungsroman, when “a teenager transforms from a bewildered,undisciplined, being lack of clear social norms condition to a mature state, he has toexperience a series of dramatic stories and a hard journey.”[10]The artistry ofBildungsroman is protagonists’ growing experiences and inspiration during theirsocialization process. Therefore, this chapter will interpret the content of Cloudstreetand Breath, which will focus on protagonists’ frustrating experiences and difficultgrowing journey, including their pursuit of identity, rebellions and final initiation.
A. Protagonists’Pursuit of Identity
The problem of identity has always been an important theme of multitudinousliterary works, many literary masters have interpreted the identity issues in theirworks, for instance, philosopher St. Augustine has sought for self-identity in hisConfession by remembering the past. Hemingway has depicted an old man’s pursuitof a fisherman identity through fighting with a big fish in The Old Man and the Sea.Moreover, Franz Kafka expresses hero’s loss of identity after transforming into abeetle in his The Metamorphosis. Therefore, it is fair to say that writers are inclined tomeditate and explore the identity questions in their works.In modern cultural study and culture criticism, Wang Minan interprets twoessential meanings of the word “identity” in his Key Words in Cultural Studies,One refers to some evidences or scales with specific, significant featureswhich can be used by an individual or a group to recognize their social status,such as gender, class, ethnicity, etc. In this sense, we can use the word‘identity’ to express the meaning. On the other hand, when an individual or agroup attempt to search for or confirm their ‘identity’in culture, ‘identity’alsocan be termed ‘recognition’.We can find Wang’s two types of interpretation of “identity” have closerelationship, the former is about achieving self position, the latter is about confirmingposition by gaining the recognition from the same ethical social group. Consideringthese two aspects, “identity” actually is an issue about searching for some kind ofhomoousia.
