rally and flexibly and his translations are pleasant toread. The American readers would image that if the Shandongfarmers, who grow garlic in the story, spoke English instead ofChinese, they would have spoken the same words as they did inthe translated novel. If the original writer Mo Yan wrote the storyin English, his words would have been exactly the same as thoseEnglish words used by Howard Goldblatt.”Wen Jun(2007:79)points out,“Faithfulness is the first taskof translators. The Chinese writers whose works are translated byHoward Goldblatt are all unique in style and content……Faithful ness from the beginning to the end is the first rule followed byHoward Goldblatt in translation.”Wang Xiaochuan(2007:) madea comprehensive study of Goldblatt in his M.A.
thesis On How ard Goldblatt’s Translation, Dong Jingjing(2008) carried out a de tailed analysis of the influence of translator’s cultural identity onGoldblatt’s translation, Jin Xiuying(2009)gave a brief introduc tion to Goldblatt’s view of translation, Guan Meng(2009)studiedGoldblatt’s translation style from the perspective of systemic-functional grammar, ,Hu Anjiang(2010)discussed the translatormodel, translating
strategy and the“going out”project to pro mote Chinese literature abroad with Goldblatt as an example.,Sun Huijun’s“Learning Translation from Howard Goldblatt”published in The Knowledge of English(2011). As for Goldblatt’snumerous English translations, studies mainly focus on only sev eral such as Chen Lijuan’s master thesis of Commenting on Gold blatt’s Translation of Daughter of River from the Gender Perspec tive (2006), Hu Yuan’s Cultural Misleading in Literary Transla tion: A case study of Red Sorghum(2008) and Dr. Lv Minhong’sarticle“Images in Mind and Animation on Paper: Goldblatt’s Im age Creating in His Translation of Chinese Fiction(2009)Some western scholars also comment on the translation ofHoward Goldblatt, Red Chan(2003:65)once observed, “whosevoice, after all, is the reader of the translation hearing, the writerof the source text, or the rewrite of the translation? If it is Goldb latt’s practice to use Americanized nuances, one can then as sume his readers hear more of his voice than of the original au thor’s.”Obviously, Red Chan questioned the domestication trans lation strategy used by Goldblatt, which he thought would re place the original author’s voice. However, in contrast to Red Chan’s question, Dick Adlerappreciated Goldblatt’s translation of Wang Shuo’s typical Bei jing dialect into Americanized and idiomatic slang. He(Alder,2012) remarked that“In Howard Goldblatt’s lively translation, the author’s dialogue has the snap of enhanced reality.”Current studies on the English version Red Sorghum in Chi na are still rare and the author has merely collected several arti cles and papers concerning it from . Respective in troductions of them will be as follows:Zhong Zhiqing(钟志清,2001)selected and summarized threerepresentative book reviews on Red Sorghum from three influen tial journals, namely, The New York Times Book Review, LondonReview of Books and Literary Review in his article English Crit ics’Reviews on Red Sorghum. Zuo Miaomiao(左苗苗,2008)carriedout a comprehensive study on Honggaoliang Jiazu’s receptionsand variations in America based on postcolonial translation theo ry, Lefevere’s rewriting theory and imago logy in comparative lit erature in her M.A. thesis. Afterwards, she wrote a paper titledVariations of Narrative Plots and Mode in the Translated Hong gaoli
