Chapter 2 Theoretical Framework

2.1 Introduction to Functional Equivalence Theory

Eugene Nida is an American linguist,translator,translation theorist,Bible studyexpert and Bible translation organizer.He is one of the first scholars to make a rigorousstudy of translation from a scientific perspective(Ma&Lei,2022).Nida is a prolificlanguage and translation theorist.From 1945 to 2004,he published over 200 articles andauthored more than 40 books(including co-edited and co-authored).He has written over20 works on language and translation theory and published a collection of theses.

Nida first proposed the two important translation concepts of“formal equivalence”and“dynamic equivalence”.Formal equivalence emphasizes the completeness andaccuracy of information,both in form and content.This requires the translator toaccurately reproduce the form and content of the original text during the translationprocess.In dynamic equivalence,the translator’s goal is not only to achieve thecorrespondence between words,but also to make the target language readers’response tothe information consistent with the source language readers’response to the information(Nida,2004).‘

With the diversification of language forms,Nida believes that it is more appropriateto change“dynamic equivalence”to“functional equivalence”,which puts less emphasison the purpose of translation and the practicality of communication(Deng,2019).According to Nida,translation is not simply the conversion of one language into another,but the reproduction of the original language in the most appropriate,natural,andequivalent language.Functional equivalence requires not only a correspondence betweenthe translated text and the original text in content,but also as much formal consistency aspossible.Because of this,the translator uses functional equivalence theory as a better wayto translate articles than dynamic equivalence.

2.2 Feasibility of Functional Equivalence Theory

The use of functional equivalence theory to guide the translation of the original textis feasible for the following reasons.
