6.1 Findings

As aforementioned,CT is a ubiquitous and intricate language phenomenonthat possesses ample studies in divergent fields and disciplines.CombiningBousfield’s impoliteness model and Spencer-Oatey’s rapport management theory,this thesis focuses on the speech acts in family CTs and attempts to explore thefactors that influence the strategy use.By virtue of NVivo,the impolite strategiesare marked based on the measurements of Bousfield’s impoliteness strategy.

The research material are divided into two groups,namely spousal CTs andparent-child CTs.It is found that most strategies are on-record strategies,includingdeny,question provocatively,challenge,criticize or disgrace,snub or block,argue,frighten or threaten,disinterest or be uninterested.Among them,argue is in thedominating league in both groups,whereas off-record strategies are not commonthroughout the data sets.Besides,although spouses,parents and children showsome commonplace in strategy use,some obvious distinctions still exist.Firstly,inspousal CTs,criticize and disgrace bear higher frequencies than other strategiesexcept argue,while in parent-child CTs,deny bear higher frequencies.Secondly,although the most frequent strategy of the two CTs in the initiation and escalationstage is argue,criticize and disgrace is another strategy that would lead to,or evenescalate spousal CTs,while in case of parent-child CTs,they are order and deny.Besides,in spousal CTs,men argue more,while women criticize or disgrace more;in parent-child CTs,parent tend to deny their children’s requests with order,whereas children often argue in interaction with their parents.
