Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Literature Review
Since publication, Uncle Tom’s Cabin and The Color Purple have both been paid much attention to and studied from different perspectives by scholars and critics at home and abroad.
1.1.1 Studies on Uncle Tom’s Cabin
Harriet Beecher Stowe is one of the most famous American novelists in the 19th century. Her masterpiece Uncle Tom’s Cabin triggered American Civil War to a great extent and had a significant and profound impact on American society. Since publication, Uncle Tom’s Cabin have been attached great importance to and studied from several perspectives by scholars and critics at home and abroad.
In terms of foreign researches on Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the research perspectives mainly included the author, historical influence, character analysis, religious perspective, Feminism and so forth.
Numerous foreign scholars tended to analyze and study Uncle Tom’s Cabin from the perspective of the author. In “Heroines in Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1977),” Elizabeth Ammons analyzed Uncle Tom’s Cabin on the basis of exploration of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s life experience and thought highly of her unique skills in shaping various characters. In What Manner of Woman (1977), Marlene Springer’s attention was paid to personal life experience and religious belief of the author, Harriet Beecher Stowe, concluding that Uncle Tom’s Cabin exactly exerted a great impact on the world. And in “Dying Instruction: Puritan Pedagogy in Uncle Tom’s Cabin (2010),” Molly Farrell focused on Harriet Beecher Stowe’s writing background to give an analysis of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and stated that the author’s identity as a pious christian played a vital and non-negligible role in her creation of the novel.
1.2 Intertextuality Theory
Intertextuality is a textual theory in the transitional period from structuralism to post-structuralism. It is one of the literary terms that has been most frequently used in modern literary theory and culture research. In this part I’d like to talk about the origin of Intertextuality Theory from Saussure and Bakhtin to Kristeva and the development of Intertextuality Theory at home and abroad.
1.2.1 The Origin of Intertextuality Theory
In the 1960s, the French post-structuralist critic Julia Kristeva creatively put forward Intertextuality Theory by inheriting and developing Saussure’s structuralism linguistics and Bakhtin’s dialogism. Therefore, the origin of Intertextuality Theory can be traced back to Saussure and Bakhtin.
Ferdinand de Saussure is the founder of modern linguistics. His structuralism linguistics had a significant impact on intertextuality, which can be mainly divided into two aspects: the non-referential nature of language symbols and the discrepancy of language symbols. In Saussure’s view, language symbols are the combination of the signifier and the signified, and the meaning of language symbols owns non-referential nature. Language symbols connect concepts and sound impressions (1980: 101).
