Language,as a medium,is important in social life through the establishment ofinterpersonal relationships.However,it is challenging for people to communicate witheach other without conflict.Conflict discourse arises whenever one of the communicatingparties disagrees with the other party’s ideas or behaviors and intends to express them,andit is very common in our lives.In interpersonal communication,once differences arise,conflict discourse arises subsequently.Thus,it is difficult to achieve smooth andharmonious communication,and the communication of two or more parties will beaffected.So conflict discourse is worth conducting in-depth research.There are variousreasons for conflicts:cognition,interests,value,and communication barriers.Conflict andimpoliteness often occur together,and conflict discourse is clearly characterized byimpoliteness.These two terms,which can generally be used interchangeably,are morefrequently used in the field of impoliteness because they both refer to the opposite ofharmonious communication(Geng,2017).Impoliteness often occurs to satisfy somepurposes of the initiator,so it is pretty common among family members and close friendsas well.

1.2 Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the conflict discourse in The Kitchen God’sWife by using the impoliteness theories of Culpeper(1996)and Bousfield(2008).Thisnovel is a portrayal of the life of the protagonist,Winnie.Female discourse conflicts,family discourse conflicts,and marital discourse conflicts can all be found in The KitchenGod’s Wife.This novel has a lot of connotations,and the author,Amy Tan,attempts to express her thoughts in a unique way:feminist thought.And by analyzing the conflictdiscourses in the novel,this thesis attempts to catch a meager glimpse of her spiritualworld.

First of all,the study will be conducted on the differences in the use of impolitenessstrategies in discourse conflicts between different characters and the reasons for thedifferences.And then,the thesis will find out the output strategies and response patterns ofimpoliteness used in the conflict discourse in the novel The Kitchen God’s Wife.Finally,the study will classify the output strategies and response patterns of impoliteness accordingto the classification criteria of Culpeper and Bousfield and analyze the representatives ofconflict discourses in detail,figuring out the causes and consequences of conflicts.It aimsat providing ideas and guidance for subsequent research on conflict discourse,avoidingconflict discourse,and creating a harmonious language environment.

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Previous Studies of Conflict Discourse
