Chapter Four Analysis of Paratexts in Knoblock’s andHutton’s Thick Translation

4.1 Paratext Category in the Two Renditions

John Knoblock is a professor of philosophy and chair of the Department ofPhilosophy at Miami University.His rendering of Xunzi is named Xunzi:ATranslation and Study of the Complete Work,which is divided into three separatebooks punished specifically in 1988,1990,and 1994 by the Stanford University Press.Knoblock divides the translation into three volumes,the first volume is a summaryand 1-6 chapters,the second book is chapters 7-16,and the third book is 17-32.Eachchapter in each volume is accompanied by detailed materials.For example,theintroduction paragraph of the second volume introduces the life of Xunzi and hispolitical thoughts.The third book deals with arguments concerning logic,epistemology,and language.In addition,each volume contains an index to make iteasy for the reader to inquire about the problems in each text and some of theimportant vocabulary used in Xunzi.Paratexts in Knoblock’s rendition will be listed inthis part.

Eric Hutton,a professor of Philosophy at the University of Utah,has beenengaged in the translation and teaching of Chinese philosophical classics for a long time.His English rendering of Xunzi was published in the year of 2014 with the titleof Xunzi:The Complete Text.And that is not the only book he has published withcontent about Xunzi.In 2016,Professor Hutton published his Dao Companion to thePhilosophy of Xunzi.And this section of Chapter Four will list the types of paratextsin the two renditions according to Genette’s paratext theory.

5.1 Findings of the Research

The author of this thesis finds that although the two translators both use thicktranslation strategies to translate,the thicknesses of their paratexts are different in theaspects of number and contents.Here are the main findings of this research.
