Chapter One Predicament between Ideality and Reality
1.1 Fighting for Female history against Historical Absence
Beauvoir and Byatt both believe that women are socially constructed, rather than born as women. Beauvoir famously declared in The Second Sex that “one is not born, but rather becomes, a woman” (Beauvoir 2011, 283). She points out that women are defined by men as the “Other”, rather than as a subject. Women are given a series of stereotypes and ideals, such as the “eternal feminine”, the “mother”, the “lover”, etc., which are to satisfy men’s needs and fantasies. Women are restricted to the realm of “immanence”, and cannot enter the realm of “transcendence”. Women are deprived of their freedom and agency, and can only depend on men.
Byatt also shows how women are socially constructed in Possession. She uses two parallel storylines to compare Victorian and modern women. Victorian poet Christabel LaMotte and modern scholar Maud Bailey are both defined by men as the “Other”. Christabel is considered an “outsider”, because she rejects the traditional female roles, such as marriage, childbirth, obedience to men, etc. She chooses an independent and non-traditional lifestyle, including writing poetry, living with a lesbian lover Blanche Glover, having a secret affair with a married poet Randolph Henry Ash, etc. Maud is also considered a “monster”, because she focuses on her academic research, avoids romantic attachments, wears masculine clothes, etc. She chooses a solitary and non-social lifestyle, including studying LaMotte’s works, collaborating with colleague Roland Michell to discover the secret relationship between Ash and LaMotte, etc.
1.2 Fighting for Female Right against Patriarchal Oppression
As is put forward by Lacan, the pre-Oedipus period is usually dominated by female forces. Once a child enters the period in which the law of fathers intrudes, great changes take place. Lacan holds the view that the phallus will always dominate and women will always be at the margins of the symbolic order. Since they cannot internalize “the law of fathers”, it will be imposed upon them via the masculine language with which they are endowed.
Along with the legendary women with metamorphic characteristics, Byatt also depicts various Victorian women who, without exception, are all the targets of male gaze. LaMotte, a woman from the Victorian era, is a poet and a mother. LaMotte embodies the vibrant vitality and artistic inventiveness of women because she is both a poet and a mother. For her contemporaries, LaMotte was a significant writer, a source of inspiration, and a role model. She is both a poet and a mother, embodying both the vivid vitality and artistic creativity of women. She was a gifted poet, penning poems that even Ash liked. However, she was also unmarried, pregnant, and lived in isolation with her best friend. La Motte was single, lived alone with her best friend Blanche, refused to put up with prejudice from the outside world, and had early feminist ideals. LaMotte was not commended for her achievements in the Victorian era. Nevertheless, she became known as a heretic, degenerate woman, a woman similar to the Sphinx-like monster, and her activitie本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
