ng. Ininstructional experiment design key factors involve researchermanipulation of the independent variable, careful control of extraneousvariables and precise measure of the dependent variable.
Ⅰ.Ques tion
The research question of the study is “ the effects of the explicitteaching of strategies on students’L2 growth” . That is the researcherhypothesizes that the explicit teaching of strategies will lead to thestudents’L2 scores improvement as a result of instruction in the specificstrategies needed to carry out the task.(O’ Malley,1985)
Ⅱ.Significance / Value of The Study
The research justified the research on the grounds that, high schoolstudents’ linguistic performance in giving oral reports showed nosignificant improvement, there is a need for researchers to find out anefficient way to help facilitate it in classroom settings. Such research canprovide
guidelines for providing learning strategies in the classroom toserve learners’need for improving English.
Ⅲ.Procedure / Data and Analys is Sixty - four college freshmen were selected enrolled in low -intermediate ESL classes and were equally divided into two groups(classes). A group of 32 students are randomly assigned to theexperimental group and the rest to the control group (not giving
strategyinstruction). Those students in the experimental class would then receivethe program through the strategy instruction.
Ⅳ.Ins trument and Methodology
Two data collection instruments were used in the study: thequestionnaire designed to detect learning strategy used in ESL classroom:a) presenting an introduction explaining the purpose of the study; and b)requesting information on learning strategy uses with language activities. They were different in the wording of questions to suit the interviewees, i.e., students were asked about the strategies they used. The otherinstrument means is the examination paper from College English Band 4.Data were collected over a period of four months of instruction. Toensure the equivalence, a pretest should be given to them.Nothing exceptwhether receiving strategy instruction or not is different, when theexperiment is terminated (after 4 months), a test is done again. You wouldcompare results with the initial test results, analyze the grand meanscores of the two tests improved from the
www.51lunwen.org treatment group and controlgroup respectively. The t tests were applied to determine whether thereare significant differences from the two measures.
Conclus ion
Focusing the study on whether the strategy instruction have an effecton English learners’scores. The results of these analyses indicate thatthe treatment group outperformed the control group in improving languageproficiency. This finding, however, provided no evidence that the effect ofthe treatment was more effective in vocabulary or reading measures.Different kinds of experimental researches are important researchtools in language study and they have added significantly to theknowledge of language learning, teaching and use. Sometimes it isinappropriate. So we should balance our choice to make it more valid andreliable.
