Chapter Four Manipulation Themes
4.1 Mind:Why We Fight
The theme of“Why We Fight”is not a novel concept,as it was derived from the President’sspeech. In a“Fireside Chat”given to the nation on January 6,1942,Roosevelt proclaimed that“we are fighting for security, for progress, and for peace, not only for one generation but for allgenerations. We are fighting to cleanse the world of ancient evils, ancient ills”(7).Besides,VicePresident Wallace adamantly declared that“there can be no compromise with Satan...we shallfight for a complete peace as well as a complete victory”(10).Thus,the national leadership’sstance on this issue was firmly established in people’s minds:the current conflict was provokedby the enemy, and they must fight with the enemy for the ultimate peace.
Hollywood also emphasizes America’s impetus for revenge.Accordingly, the charactersfeatured in these films generally possess compelling reasons or touching stories that instillboundless courage to fight. For instance,in Wake Island,Major Caton informed Cameron thathis wife was killed during the Pearl Harbor attack.Despite being unable to assuage Cameron’sgrief,he remarked that memories of loved ones can inspire one to fight in the war.He remindsCameron of the multitudes of men like themselves who are fighting to eradicate the evils of theenemy and to destroy their foes with guns, bayonets, tanks, ships, and planes. These wordsembolden Cameron, propelling the plot forward.Cameron claims that he can destroy the enemycruiser by taking two bombs, despite being low on fuel and the difficulty of the undertaking.
Conclusion
Hollywood films have long been an effective tool of the American government’s politicalpropaganda, especially in the two world wars.Hollywood propaganda during World War IIbenefits from the propaganda practices during World War I and the vigorous development ofcommunication theories after World War I.Besides,it is inseparable from the establishment of“big administration”during the New Deal and Roosevelt’s strong presidency.
During World War II,Roosevelt Administration established Office of War Information, aprofessional agency for public opinion propaganda, and adopted it as a medium to strengthen themanipulation of Hollywood in policy making, theme shaping, and marketing. Then,OWI forgeda film system of creation, production, and distribution to serve war propaganda.
Based on the historical facts, the study finds that Roosevelt’s dual identities as a Presidentand an“ordinary person”exert significant influence on the manipulation process. At the macrolevel, inheriting the experiences of Hollywood propaganda during World War I,RooseveltAdministration employs more sophisticated strategies to manipulate Hollywood during WorldWar II.Specifically,it establishes a“complex and efficient”communication system involvingthe following three aspects.Firstly,Hollywood studios are usually r本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
