ails.

While yet he spake they had arrived before A pillar’d porch, with lofty portal door, Where hung a silver lamp, whose phosphor glow Reflected in the slabbed steps below. Mild as a star in water; for so new. And so unsullied was the marble hue So through the crystal polish, liquid fine Ran the dark veins,  …… Of the wide doors disclos’d a place unknown Some time to any, but those two alone, And a few Persian mutes, who that same year Were seen about the markets: none knew where …… Shut from the busy world of more incredulous. (Complete Poems 351)

The palace is luxuriously built by Lamia’s spell in the first place and there is no disturbance from the outside. Lamia intentionally constructs this place just for Lycius and her to enjoy their pure love.

2.2 The Palace as a Marital Prison

Before Lycius goes to the palace with Lamia, Lycius falls in love with her crazily. Lycius, driven by the urge of his senses, gives Lamia a compassionate gaze reminiscent of Orpheus’ longing look at Eurydice—a gaze that conveys both affection and foreshadows a tragic consequence. Subsequently, love burgeons, for “so delicious were the words she sung,” representing the initial mention of music’s catalytic role in Lycius’ blossoming emotions. Rapidly and irretrievably, Lycius descends into the depths of profound infatuation, unable to resist the irresistible allure, proclaiming, “even as thou vanishes so I shall die,” thus exemplifying his willingness to sacrifice himself for the sake of Lamia.

Another pivotal moment arises when Lycius succumbs to a temporary unconsciousness, only to awaken in the presence of Lamia, who graciously commences her enchanting song, effortlessly guiding him from one trance-like state to another.

The next instance occurs as “Lycius from death awoke into maze, to see her still, and singing so sweet lays; then from maze into delight he fell.” Lamia’s mellifluous melodies undeniably serve as a driving force behind Lycius’ burgeoning affection. Moreover, he ardently admires Lamia’s resplendent physical beauty (visually), cherishes the mesmerizing cadence of her melodious voice (aurally), and ardently desires her physical presence (“if her eyes could brighter be, with brighter eyes and slow amenity, put her new lips to his, and gave afresh the life she had so tangled in her mesh”). Consequently, Lycius is enticed by Lamia effortlessly, igniting within him an all-consuming love that knows no bounds.

Chapter Three  The Vulnerability of Utopianism

3.1 The Fall of the Palace

When Lycius steps into the love palace constructed by Lamia, the stage is set for a collision between sensibility and rationality, and the answer to whether sensibility would beat rationality over or not will soon be revealed.

Lycius is of no doubt poses as a huge challenge to the palace. Though this young man论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
