摘要:Since the reform of English teaching has been ongoing in China up until now, some Chinesestudents still cannot get rid of such embarrassing phenomenon that even though some studentsare quite good at reading, writing and translating, they find that they have trouble in expressingthemselves in the target language successftilly when communicating with native speakers afteryears of English learning.
Chapter 2 Literature Review
This chapter elaborates a general review of CSs with the purpose to have the knowledge ofCSs. Therefore, definition of CSs in two different approaches, taxonomies of CSs, a review ofprevious CSs study abroad and at home, and the types of CSs used in present study aredemonstrated one by one.
2.1 Definition of Communication Strategy
To define CS, we should be clear that more researchers have agreed to defineCommunication Strategies based on two main approaches: the interactional approach and thepsycholinguistic approach.
2.1.1 Definition from the Angle of Interactional Approach
"Interaction" is one of the essential characteristics of CSs from the view of interactionalapproach. That is, it views CSs from a social perspective and emphasizes a mutual process,involving with the effort of the speaker and the listener. There are the influential definitionslisted as follows:Tarone, Cohen and Dumas (1976) hold that CSs is "a systematic attempt by the learner toexpress or decode meaning in the target language, in situations where the appropriate systematictarget language rules have not been formed". This definition implies that CSs are systematic butnot comprehensive. Although the interactive trait is reflected by emphasizing the decoding andencoding processes of the meaning in communication, it only reveals that CSs are employed onlywhen language learners fail to express the meaning because of their lack of language knowledge.That is, as for the definition proposed by Tarone, Cohen and Dumas, native speakers are notinvolved in this process. Theoretically, "only language learners are regarded as users of CSswhen their interlanguage has not been fully developed, although communication breakdownsalso occur in one's native language (Kellcrman, 1991; Yule & Tarone, 1990; Domyei & Scott,1995).
