harm and depth, thusgiving readers a reason to analyze the stanzas. From this point of view, metaphors arevery vital, and just because of this, poetry is taken as a profound text that requires deepexploration. However, the interpretation of metaphors is difficult because poems alwayshave several connotations, and different readers may have different understandings. Therefore, some developments in cognitive linguistics are reasonable to explain theproblem. According to the cognitive linguistics, language is not only a communicativetool, but also a cognitive process by which human beings can form concrete conceptsabout the abstract expressions and experiences found in poetry.Poetry is the product of both the poets' and the readers' cognitive minds in thephysical world and society. This theory is called Cognitive Poetics. It believes thatmetaphor is a powerful tool to make the thinking process more explicit. Therefore, it isvery essential to study metaphors in poems.

1.2 Objective of the Study研究目标

Undoubtedly, metaphor belongs to language, and it is a necessary component ofpoetry. Robert Frost (1874-1963), who has been the focus of the modern literal study, isundoubtedly a master who is good at describing his experiences and transforming theconventional ideas by employing the new metaphors. He is one of the greatest poets inthe 20th century and is the only poet who has won the Pulitzer Prize four times. Hisworks have been studied deeply, which provides a sufficient basis and reason for thethesis. As a modern poet, Frost creates a completely new poetic style. He tries to inheritthe tradition and creates his own writing technique which is fresh and mixed with oralfeatures. He also prefers the popular rhythm, such as heroic couplet, terza rima, quatrainand sonnet. Although his language is plain and colloquial compared with othercontemporary poets', it can reflect the truth clearly and vividly. One important reason isthe usage of metaphors. In a way, metaphors make poems more philosophical andincrease the poetic tension. In his opinion, poetry is metaphorical. He often explains adeeper meaning by using an ordinary thing and insists that every poem should have atleast one metaphor, or it will be meaningless. People call Frost "natural poet", for he hascreated so many poems which describe nature, including lakes, trees, the sun, stars, flowers and animals, which are the common images in most of his poems. Besides, healso uses the same thing to refer to different metaphorical meanings. This is anotheroutstanding characteristic in Frost's poems. The thesis, compared with other traditionalliterary analyses, aims to use cognitive linguistics to analyze metaphors and create aunified cognitive model of metaphors in Robert Frost's poems. Therefore, the goal of thisthesis is to make a study of the relationship between the source domain and the targetdomain through Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Conceptual Integration Theory and tryto find out and set forth a unified cognitive model of metaphors in Frost's poems.

1.3 Significance of the Study研究意义

Poetry is a special form of literature, and its meanings are difficult to comprehendfrom the superficial words. Some connotations are even opposite to the literal meanings. This is just like what Frost has said: "Poetry is one possible way of saying one thing andmeaning another" (Luo Lianggong, 2002: 68).论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
