nglish, however, the choice of theme should meet the needs ofsyntax.Other linguists such as Peng Wangheng (1993), Hu Zhuanglin (1994), Fang Yan (1995),and Peng Xuanwei (2000) apply thematic theory to analyze Chinese syntactic forms.Zheng Guiyou (2000) puts forward that only by focusing on the structure of single sentence,we can see Chinese as a topic-prominent language. What is more, according to HuangGuowen (2002), in the past 20 years, Halliday’s Systematic Functional Linguistics has beenstudied and applied to the analysis of both English and Chinese widely in theory research andforeign language teaching on the mainland of China.Thus it is seen that the researches above have offered us a theoretical and practicalevidence to analyze Chinese with the Theme-Rheme Theory.Second, Zhao Pu (1998) argues that textual coherence can be analyzed in four aspects:pragmatic and semantic implication, lexical cohesion, grammatical cohesion as well asthematic structure and information structure. Among them, thematic structure and informationstructure, which are seen as kinds of internal cohesion, are arousing more and more people’sinterest. Angela Downing (2001) points out that the coherence of a discourse or a text hasgreat dealings with thematic organization. Therefore, the internal organization of a text liesgreatly in its semantic coherence and the writer should control the new information which isaccumulated successively as the text unfolds gradually. Yang Feifei (2004) also proposes thatthe studies of thematic progression benefit us a lot in obtaining the essence of text coherenceand the appropriate choices of TP patterns can also make contribution to the internalorganization of coherent texts. In addition, lots of linguists both at home and abroad, such asDanes, Huang Yan, Zhu Yongsheng also have confirmed the importance of TP patterns inconstruction of discourses.Since Thematic Progression can help us make clear the organization of the whole textthrough the analysis of relations between Themes and Rhemes, it is supposed to make greatcontributions to the contrast analysis between English and Chinese. Hence, as a kind of text,the cohesion and coherence in addresses can also be figured out by means of TP. This cansupport us to analyze Chinese and American leaders’ addresses in terms of TP patterns.Besides, according to the contrastive study, it will be easier to make readers have a clear ideaof the inter-clausal relations and the internal organization of the discourses and have a quickunderstanding of the author’s thought. In addition, it can give readers some clues about thesimilar and different features of the addresses in different languages, which can benefit boththe address writing and the official address translation.Third, the contrastive study of the discourses in different languages can not only train ourawareness of different cultures, but also can give the second language learners new sight onthe cross-cultural communications as well .Therefore, according to the previous statements, it is feasible to make a contrastive studyof American and Chinese leaders’ official addresses.1.3 Research QuestionsThe present study intends to solve the following five questions:(1) What are the features of choices of themes in both types of texts?(2) What is the feature of choice of TP patterns in Chinese leaders’ addresses?(3) What is the feature of choice of TP patterns in American leaders’ addresses?(4) How does the information flow in Chinese and the
