Chapter 1 Introduction引言

1.1 Introduction to the thesis引言
隐喻是传统上被视为一个特定的修辞手段,已超过2000年的研究。亚里士多德(1954年)。西方传统修辞学的主要创始人之一,认为隐喻是一种语言的诗歌或文学作品的特点Metaphor is traditionally viewed as a particular rhetorical device, which has beenstudied for more than 2,000 years. Aristotle (1954). one of the leading founders ofWestern traditional rhetoric, considers that metaphor is a linguistic characteristic ofpoems or literary works. According to Aristotle, metaphor is transference of names. In hisPoetics, Aristotle comments: "Metaphor consists in giving a thing a name that belongs tosomething else, the transference being either from genus to species, or from species togenus, or from species to species, or on grounds of analogy” (Aristotle. 1982). Metaphoris a universal phenomenon. It is ubiquitous in our daily life. Richards (1936) points outthat metaphor is the omnipresent principle of language and prevails in human life, in theprecise science. In our daily communication, there may appear a metaphor in every threesentences. Thus it has been an object of study since Aristotle.https://www.51lunwen.org/languagethesis/ Traditionally, metaphor is only a linguistic phenomenon, a special rhetoric andpoetic language, which differs from commonly used language. For that reason, metaphordoes not get its deserved attention by mainstream linguists until the publication ofMetaphors We Live By written by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). which infuses new vitalityinto the metaphor research. In the book, new views are put forward, which arecompletely different from the traditional theory, in that metaphor is essentiallyconceptual. Metaphor not only expresses language but also exerts decisive impact onhuman thought and behavior. Therefore, the book Metaphors We Live By has beenregarded as a sign of “Cognitive Turn" in metaphor research. It is the first time that theconcept of image schema and metaphorical mapping is introduces into this field. As we know, cognitive linguistics has entered its embryo period in late 1980s.During its development and maturing stage, we get to know some celebrated names andtheir works, such as Lakoff and Johnson (1980). Talmv (1983), Fillmore (1975). Lakoff(1987) and Langacker (1987), etc. In recent years, cognitive linguistic theories, such asthe cognitive grammar approach, conceptual metaphor theory and the mental spaceframework, have proposed new ways of looking at the processes of meaning construction. The conceptual integration theory, also known as conceptual blending theory, which isadvanced by Fauconnier and Turner in another addition to the list of cognitive theories, isa further development of metaphor theory and mental space theory that plays asignificant role in showing the inadequacies of the abstract- algorithmic, and is embodiedviews that dominated structuralism, generative linguistics, and logic-basedtruth-conditional approaches to semantics. However. Lakoff & Johnson's cognitive studyof metaphor opens a new page for the contemporary study of metaphor. Since then, manyscholars have contributed to this work from a variety of disciplines and there seems tohave been a "Metaphorical Revolution" on a global scale. Johnson called this"metaphormania'*. Among the well-known scholars and researchers in themultidisciplinary studies, there are Lakoff, Johnson, Turner, Ricoeur. Sweetser.
