The United States has the largest possession of vehicles, thevehicle registration amounted to 240 million; followed by China, has a capacity of 78 millionvehicles; Japan ranks 3rdwith a capacity of 74 million vehicles. This news reveals thatautomobile has become the most essential thing in people’s daily life. As the world gets morecomplicated, driving cars around helps people cope with the demands of modern life. And fromthe news we get that China also can be called as the countries on the wheels, as the UnitedStates did.Since the entry into WTO in 2001 and the rapid development of economy in China, moreand more foreign automobile industries began to set their sights on China. In such a situation, howdo these automobile companies compete with each other? Advertisement is definitely anindispensable strategy to help them to solve this problem.Advertisement, a special type of communication, is used by advertisers to persuade theconsumers to buy the products or services. Though there are countless advertisements aroundus nowadays, not all of them could eventually achieve the advertisers’ original goals.Successful advertisements must be effectively entertaining and persuasive to attract consumers’attention and awareness and stick in their memory in stead of being just informative (Wells,Burnett and Moriaty, 2000).From a pragmatics perspective, advertisement is a persuasive speech act. To create asuccessful advertisement depends on the proper use of language. advertising language alwaysappears to be short but informative, because the products’ information is hided in the languageby means of presupposition. Goddard (1998) points out that presupposition plays an importantrole in English advertisements in The Language of Advertising. In Pragmatics, Peccei (2000)indicated that presupposition can serve advertisements and also made some examples to proveher point of view. Chen Xinren (1998) has the same opinions with Peccei, he did a furtherstudy and gave the classification of pragmatic presuppositions in advertisements. Theseresearches set the stage for this thesis.
1.2 Research objective and significance研究目标和意义
With the economic globalization and the improvement of the people’s living standard,automobile has gradually become so essential in people’s daily life.
