1.3 The overall structure of the research研究的总体结构
There are six chapters in this thesis. The content of the Chapter One is mainly about theintroduction of the humor，which includes the purpose of the research, the significance of theresearch and the structure of the thesis. In Chapter Two, it briefly reviews the literature aboutthe humor, including the research situation of humor abroad and at home, the definition andthe classification of humor. Then, in Chapter Three, it firstly puts our attention to theeffectiveness of the presupposition in humor. Secondly, it explains the function of deixis increating humor. Thirdly, the thesis analyzes the contribution of the cooperative principal to theproduction of the humor~including the quantity maxim, the quantity maxim, the relevancemaxim and the manner maxim. In Chapter Four it puts stress on the similarities betweenChinese and English humor from two aspects: the written form and rhetoric. While from therhetoric angle, it includes five aspects: pun, hyperbole, parody, irony and metaphor with agreat many of examples from both languages. Chapter Five focuses on the differencesbetween Chinese and English humor from aspects including geographical and historicalperspective, choosing the occasions and objects and style differences. In the last chapter, thethesis summaries the functions of humor, then it brings out the limitations and suggestions forthe future research.
