Abstract
Left Dislocation Construction is a cross-linguistic phenomenon, which has been mainly studied under the framework of generative linguistics. This thesis borrows some cognitive theories, namely, grammaticalization, subjectification, Reference-point Model, to analyze the production mechanism and motivations of LDC. Furthermore, a comparison between English LDC and Chinese LDC is made, which enlightens us to discover the interdependent relationship of language and cognition.
In this thesis, LDC is defined from three aspects. First, it refers to a structure in which a non-vocative noun phrase is dislocated to the initial place of a clause and leaves a pronoun or another noun phrase in the original place. Second, the dislocated element possesses a coreferential relation with the pronoun left in the original place. Third, LDC is an independent construction, which carries its own constructional meaning.
Language opens a window to probe human cognition, which sheds insights into the nature of human mind. The study of LDC from the areas of grammaticalization, subjectification, RPM confirms to the manifestation that language is the baby given birth by human cognition and the real world. In a word, language is not autonomous. Besides, the study also proves that the knowledge of language is derived from language use. The evidence that the use of LDC varies in different historic periods verifies the idea that language structure emerges from language use. Finally, through the comparative study between English LDC and Chinese LDC, we find that the grammaticalization of English and Chinese LDC goes to almost opposite ways; their subjectification possesses more similarities than differences; their cognitive construal is processed in the same way. All in all, cognitive linguistics is a feasible and powerful device to explain language use and phenomenon, whose findings are of great significance to explore human mind.
The cognitive study of LDC in English and Chinese is divided into six chapters. Chapter one provides a general introduction of LDC, objectives, significance, and methodology of the present study. Chapter two gives a brief review of the historic studies on LDC in English and Chinese. Chapter three ushers the theoretical foundations that will be adopted in the present study, concentrating on demonstrating the theories of grammaticalization, subjectification and RPM. Then these theories are applied to elaborate the production mechanism and motivations of English LDC in chapter four and Chinese LDC in chapter five. A comparison between English and Chinese LDC is unfolded in chapter five. Chapter six summarizes the major findings of the present study, stating its implications, closing with suggestions for further research.

摘   要
左移位构式是一种跨语言现象,传统上对它的研究主要限于生成语言学。本文借助认知语言学的理论,主要从语法化、主观化、认知参考点模型来探讨左移位构式的生成机制和理据性。通过英汉左移位构式的对比分析,试图寻找语言和认知之间相互依存的关系。
本文中探讨的左移位构式具备以下三种特征。句法上,它是指一个非寒暄语移至句首,并由一个代词或另一个名词填充原来的位置的结构。语义上,左移位成分和替代它位置的代词或另一名词短语具有同指关系。此外,它是一种独立构式,携带特定的构式意义。
 语言是探寻人类认知的一扇窗户,对掌握人类思维的本质提供了一把钥匙。通过对左移位构式的语法化、主观化和认知参考点模型的研究表明,语言是人类认知和现实世界互动的结晶。简而言之,语言是非自治的。此外,本文研究还证实了认知语言学的另一观点,语言知识源自语言使用。左移位构式的使用随着时期的改变而改变,这就证明语言结构由语言使用演变而来。最后,通过英汉左移位构式的对比研究表明,它们的语法化过程大相径庭;主观化过程大同小异;认知识解过程几乎相似。总之,认知语言学是诠释语言使用和现象的强有力而行之有效的工具,对探索人类思维举足轻重。
