Prior conducting any research a clear definition is needed, to ensure that the suitable data gathered and appropriate information is produced for the researcher need (Glautier, 1976). Thus the aim will identify the usefulness and relevance of the information gathered.
The study will be in a form of case study research. The data collection will exploit the questionnaire, normally a strategy considered conducive to quantitative approaches such as survey research (Yin, 2003). These were distributed to the FM employees to ascertain their views on the organisational change process, the level of user involvement and how it was managed. The findings from the questionnaire were utilised to measure the relationship between various variables.
Following on from the initial data collection stage another benefit of adopting this approach is that it provides a method to cross check the results from another (Bell, 2002).
There are many research strategies that can be adopted to conduct a study Using the common categorisation of research strategies, such as case studies, experiments, surveys, histories and analysis of archival info (Saunders et al, 2003; Yin, 2003), this study utilises the case study strategy.
3.5.2 The Case Study Approach
As it is considered by Saunders et al (2003:93) to “be a very worthwhile way of exploring existing theory” and “can enable you to challenge an existing theory and also provide a source of new hypothesis”. Therefore, the case study strategy was the most appropriate strategy to select as this study involves the empirical investigation of a specific observable fact within its real life context using various methods of data collection. With reference to the main objectives (to evaluate the role of change management and leadership in determining the success of IT outsourcing) these are clearly considered ‘how’ type question.
The author acknowledges the fact that as stated by Yin (2003) multiple case studies are considered stronger than single case studies due to the fact that findings can be taken and applied to a further case study. Although a single case study can be justified if resources are limited, and can be further justified if “the case can be considered to be a typical case”(Yin, 2003:47).
As a result of attention being paid to the deadline of this study, the fact that the author would conduct the research alone, and finally the lack of comparable level of access to another FM firms, all contributed to the decision to undertake a single case study as opposed to multiple case studies.
