Husserlian (descriptive orientation) is concerned also on both ontology and epistemology but gives priority of knowledge over practice. He believes that using experience would help researcher to clarify the assumptions, and truth to be found by knowledge. He aims to identify the structure of experience as explained by informants.
Easter-Smith et al (2002) indicated that a researcher should think carefully of the suitable research philosophy to use in designing the research and achieving its goal. Where, Machlup (2002) insisted that literate people saying that methodology is a branch of philosophy or logic, however logician prefer to say that logic is part of methodology. It is difficult to say which point of view is correct and which one comes first therefore researcher should concentrate on the aim to be achieved.
From this brief explanation, the author adopted the positivist philosophical approach in favour of interpretivism. As positivism proposes that the researcher is isolated from the research subject, which due to the fact that the author is involved throughout the change process becomes one determining factor. Unlike positivism, interpretivism does not ignore human action that is applicable to this study due to the fact that all change management theories adopt the human approach.
3.4 TYPES OF RESEARCH:
Fish (1990) emphasized the debating regarding research method and theory construction by focusing into two approaches. First, is the traditional 'objective' which is called also positivist. It aims to examine variables to predict behavior. Result would answer the question how do we measure phenomena? Research done through hypotheses and deduction generalized through statistical probability to large number of respondent selected randomly. Secondly, is the 'subjective' which is described as naturalistic, qualitative, phenomenological or interpretive. It aims to understand the organizational reality and answer the question what do the phenomena mean?. Qualitative research is done through gathering rich data, generalized through abstraction by choosing small number.
From all above it is clear that to understand a situation or phenomena there are 2 approaches: First approach, Qualitative research used to analyze available information. It gives non-numerical data considered to be descriptive and subjective in nature. This can be conducted through focus group, interviews, observation. It is considered reliable source however, it is time consuming and faces the difficulty to fix appointment especially when the sample needed is big.
Hancock, (1998:18) argued that:
