摘要:本文是一篇高中英语教学论文,笔者认为对于英语这门外语来说,要让学生提高对语言的理解能力,掌握其特定的应用场合,保证口语交流的有效性,就需要给学生提供生动直观与形象的语境,激发学生口语表达的欲望,增强学生的交际能力,提高学生的语言理解能力和运用技巧。

Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 Concept

Situational teaching approach was proposed by the English linguists between the 1920sand 1960s,where these methods were highly applicable in teaching language.Many Chinesesenior high schools adopting the same approach implies that they will be very effective inteaching the language and making the students understand better.Although grammar andvocabulary are important,the ultimate goal of teaching spoken English is to enable students tocommunicate fluently with others.Therefore,the teaching content should focus on cultivatingstudents’oral fluency and self-confidence.Students should have the opportunity to practiceoral English in the form of role-playing,discussion,and dialogue in different situations inclass.

2.1.1 The Definition of Situational Teaching Approach

Brown,Collins and Duguid(1989)discussed the concept of situational teaching inSituational Cognition and the Culture of Learning.They argued that knowledge only makessense in context,that knowledge cannot be isolated from its environment,and that the bestway to learn knowledge is to learn in context.Pittman’s term“situation”in the 1950s refers to“the interpretation of linguistic knowledge by means of demonstrations,objects,examples,etc.”British linguist Albert Sydney Hornby first established the relevant principles ofsituational pedagogy,subsequently,the connotation of situational teaching was first proposedin Situated Cognition and the Culture of Learning Educational Research.The author thinksthat situational teaching lies in the fact that the creation of a situation needs to be filled withknowledge and combined with the facts that occur in the situation,when students can produceemotional resonance in the situation,and students produce new knowledge on the basis oftheir emotional cognition.According to Richards,Rodgers,situational pedagogy is aboutcreating appropriate situations to present new words and sentence structures and practicingthem in situations that reflect how people acquire and practice new knowledge in a languageclassroom.

2.2 Review of Research on Situational Approach at Home and Abroad

Before the beginning of the research,the author briefly describes the current researchsituation at home and abroad.An extensive study has been conducted both locally andinternationally,providing a lot of information on the state of situational approach and the rolesit has played in benefiting education.

2.2.1 Related Research Abroad

The idea that education is acquired depending on the situation was first proposed byDewey,an American philosopher who proposed an argument that thought is formulated fromsituations that provides a firsthand encounter.In his submission,Dewey holds the idea thatsituational teaching approaches the teaching activities with learning and cognitivecapacities(He,2001).Hence teaching will engage both learning and thinking of the studentsenabling maximum experience.
