ad students to know what is important, while bad questions give the impression that the teacher does not recognize the students’ ability. Therefore teachers should reduce close-ended questions in favor of open-ended questions to keep students thinking.
Don’ t interrupt his/her answers immediately because in the process he may have the awareness of self-correcting.After the students answer the question, the teacher should make a proper comment.Criticism and punishment for wrong answers can make students lose confidence and lower interests. Even if the student’ s answer is not complete or satisfactory, the teacher should correct it after an appreciation is given. For example, “That is all right, can anyone expands on that?” or “I appreciate your first part of the answer, but…”It helps the teachers know the information of feedback in order to know the reasons of the mistakes the students have made in time. Teachers should help the student to sustain the interaction by providing responsive comments that encourage him or her to communicate. The teacher smiles, uses high frequency vocabulary and short, simple sentences, explains new vocabulary items, all of which are to keep the interaction going.
The question-answer interaction is not an artificial interaction, which is made or produced by teachers for students answering the questions simply or imitating something unnaturally. Questions can help students understand puzzlement and know what is important. Through the questions, teachers can attract student’s attention and learn the extent of students’ comprehension. The questions should encourage the students to reflect on their knowledge, attitudes and belief or require them to follow through and justify particular lines of reasoning. The following examples are given to make it clear:
Teacher 1: Do you come from Beijing?
Student 1: Yes, I do.
Teacher 1: Good, Beijing is next to the sea. It is very beautiful, isn’t it?
Student 1: Yes, it is.
From examples above, we can find that in the classroom the teacher asks an easy question to which the teacher and students already know the answers. As a result, students are trained to use the language in unnatural ways. Students are taught only how to reply, but not initiate conversation or only talk by teacher himself. However, question-answer should provide an open conversation. These questions don’t require any definite answers and of course shouldn’t be too difficult. What is more, the topic dealt with is often interesting. Students, not teachers, do most of talking. Students can express their true feeling and obtain the real communication. Absolutely, the question-answer is a real interaction. Next example is an open conversation.
Teacher 2: What impressed you most in the plant park?
Student 1: Very big area.I almost lost my way.
Student 2: But I had a different feeling.I can’t forget the beauty of nature.
Student 3: The air in the park was cool and fresh.
Teacher 2: Yes,you are right.Perhaps the beauty of nature struck many of you.
Student 3: Of course! I found some strange plants.and I will try to find out what their names are.
Student 4: Many voluntary workers are digging many rows of holes and then place the fragile plants in holes one by one.
Teacher 2: Yes, they were planting trees.
