III.The Importance of Training Students’ Oral English in Secondary Vocational School English Teaching
3.1 Requirements of the Employment Market
One of the basic requirements in Chinese labor market is that all of the employees must have certain level of oral English speaking.And with the booming of the international economy and business,there is a growing demand for two types of foreign language related personnel:those with foreign language competence and specialized expertise, and those with specialized expertise and foreign language competence.Therefore oral English has been more and more important for people who do not have high level of education and want to get an appropriate job.Training secondary vocational students to speak fluent and correct English has always been the most important target in the secondary teaching,and students themselves are also increasingly enthusiastic about their oral English practice because they know being able to speak fluent and accurate English ensures better job opportunities.In addition,every business wants to achieve a high quality and more international service,so it asks for employees with good English speaking ability.That is why higher expectation has been laid on the English oral ability of students specially nowadays,who are future workers in every business.
3.2 Increasing Students’ Self-confidence and Intrinsic Motivation of Learning English
The students’ success in learning English is at least partially a factor of their belief that they have ability to accomplish the task. In other words, they believe that they can do it. In author’s classroom, the students are encouraged to exchange their ideas, feelings and thoughts with teachers and classmates.Gradually,the students who have poor foundation feel that English is not so unreachable and they could keep up with planned speed of teaching.If they communicate frequently and do better than before,even the smallest, most ordinary progress, teachers should give them attention and sincere praise.They are usually told that all the progress can be made through their efforts.If the teacher pays attention to training students’ oral English expressing capacity and creating a harmony atmosphere, students will find they are able to learn English well and set free from their helplessness.Teacher’s encouragement is greatly needed during the learning process.
Intrinsic motivation plays a major role in learning English. If they are motivated, they will learn, and if not, they won’t. Motivation is the difference between success and failure. The most powerful rewards are those that are intrinsically motivated within the students. Because the learning behavior stems from needs, wants, or desires with oneself, the learning behavior itself is self-rewarding; therefore, no externally administered reward is necessary at all. If students are intrinsically motivated, they perform the task in class because it is fun, interesting, useful or challenging, and not because they anticipate some cognitive or affective rewards from the teacher. (Douglas,2002:26)
