CHAPTER FOUR CULTURAL DIFFERENCES AMONGFOUR NEWSPAPERS IN REPORTING THE MISSINGMALAYSIA AIRLINE MH370

The Malaysia Airline MH370 carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members fromKuala Lumper to Beijing lost its contact with air traffic controllers on March 7, 2014.It is said that 14 nationalities were among the passengers, including at least 152 Chinese,38 Malaysians, seven Indonesians, six Australians, five Indians, four French and threeAmericans. The plane was a Boeing 777-200 which departed from the Malaysiancapital at 12:41 a.m. and lost contact with the ground control two hours later. After theplane got missed, a joint search and rescue mission was initiated by China, Malaysia,Australia, America, Singapore, New Zealand and many other countries which lastedfrom March 8th, 2014 to January 29th, 2015 on which day the Malaysian civil aviationadministration declared that MH370 had been crashed and all the passengers werekilled. Until now, there has been no confirmation of any flight debris of the missingplane, resulting in all kinds of speculation about the whereabouts of MH370.Almost all newspapers, mainstream or nonmainstream, covered the tragedy ofMH370. To conduct the contrastive study, the author selected 313 reports from theofficial website of People’s Daily, the New York Times, China Daily and the LosAngeles Times, dated from March 7, 2014 to March 31, 2014. The exact number of thereports from each newspaper is 136 from People’s Daily, 71 from the New York Times,35 from China Daily and 25 from the Los Angeles Times. Materials selected are mainlyfocused on People’s Daily and the New York Times which are the main resources of thestudy. In order to make the study as comprehensive as possible, China Daily and theLos Angeles Times are selected as supplements.

CONCLUSION

After the detailed discussion of the differences of the four newspapers in reportingthe missing plane based on the theory of cultural context model and cultural dimensions,the thesis comes to the conclusion part which includes the findings of the thesis,proposals for Chinese media, limitations and suggestions for further studies.This thesis is based on the assumption that cultural factors exert certain influenceon disaster coverage in People’s Daily, China Daily, the New York Times and the LosAngeles Times.
