Chapter Two Process Description

2.1 Pre-tranlation

As the saying goes,“without precautions there will be failure”.Carefulpreparation is the first step to ensure the quality of the target text.(Chen Hongwei,1998)In the early stages of this translation practice,the author has made a lot ofpreparations for the text background,translation theory and translation tools.Anytranslation task is not accomplished overnight,and every part of the translationpractice process plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality of translation.

2.1.1 Preparation of text background

The translation practice materials selected by the author are chapter 17 to 21 ofHenry Wadsworth Longfellow.Longfellow was a famous poet,novelist,dramatist,translator and linguist in Europe and America.The source language of the book isEnglish.In order to complete an excellent target text,the author must have a sufficientunderstanding of the language and cultural background of the source text.The bookNon-Literary Translation points out that by reading parallel texts,translators canunderstand the background information related to the source text,learn the expressionof professional terms and imitate the style of such texts(Li Changshuan,2009).

2.2 While-translation

The author started the translation in June 2022,mainly using the human-centeredtranslation method and software-assisted translation method,which both ensures thequality of the target text and saves time.In order not to interfere with the author’sunderstanding and thinking about the source text and affect the quality of the targettext,the author has guaranteed sufficient translation time every day and tried to keepthe continuity of the translation process.

Firstly,since the practice material selected by the author is chapter 17-21,theauthor found information about people and places that overlapped with the previouschapters(1-16)in the translation process.The author has marked the names of people,places and works that she encountered in red font.For example,the names of peopleinclude Lowell,Tennyson and Walker,etc.And the names of places include Maine andNahantd,etc.After marking them in red,the author uses translation tools to find theircorresponding Chinese names and checks them with the translations of the previouschapters by Wang Wenzheng,Gu Kaixuan and others.This method can ensure theconsistency of terms throughout the book and avoid terminological differences.
