Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Confucius is a famous Chinese thinker,educator and politician during the Spring and AutumnPeriod(551 BC-479 BC).His ideological concepts and Educational ideas,Confucianism,isrecognized as the Chinese belief system and one of the most important intangible cultural heritagesof China.It embodies not only the core value of Chinese culture,but also the precious spiritualwealth of all mankind.As the representative of Confucianism,Lunyu,consisting of 24 chapters withonly 12000 words,records Confucius’s political views,morality and education principles,which isthe first-hand material for the study on Confucius and Confucianism.Besides,Confucius Institutesand Confucius Classrooms have been established around the world.As recommended reading byChinese International Education Foundation(CIEF),the English version of Lunyu has receivedmuch attention in recent years.So has academic research related to it.

So far,Lunyu has been translated into more than sixty languages.English version is one of themajor versions.According to historical records,although the English version of Lunyu earlyemerged by Randal Taylor in 1691,it’s just an indirect translation from French.The first real senseof C-E translation of Lunyu was completed by the missionary Joshua Marshman in 1809.Incompassion to the earlier abridged translation,it didn’t appear the first complete version until thefirst volume of The Chinese Classics published by the famous British sinologist James Legge in1861(Yang Ping,2008a;Wang Dongbo,2008;Cui Yujun,2010,etc.).Since then,increasing numberof scholars devoted to translating Lunyu at home and abroad,which fell mainly into westernsinologists and Chinese scholars at home and abroad.Western sinologists are represented by ArthurWaley(1938),Ezra Pound(1969),Roger T.Ames(1998),Edward Slingerland(2003),Annping Chin(2014),etc.

1.2 Purposes of the Study

The translation quality is closely related to the translators’selective adaptations and adaptiveselections and mainly reflected by translator quality,multi-dimensional transformation and readerfeedback.In other words,the holistic degree of adaptation and selection reflect well the translationquality.Considering that the translators’selective adaptation and adaptive selection are mainly issuesraised on translational eco-environment,this thesis,on the basis of previous studies,takes twoversions with completely different translational eco-environment,the English version of Lunyu byChinese scholars,Wu Guozhen,and the English version by Chinese-American scholar,AnnpingChin,as examples to analyze how two translators make adaptations and selections in the process oftranslation,and then evaluates the translation quality by exploring the holistic degree of adaptationand selection of the two versions.
